Switching from lifts to ovals
« on: September 24, 2008, 01:05:19 AM »
DEAR GOD! AN ACTUAL BOWLING RELATED TOPIC?!?!?!

I'm seriously considering flipping my inserts over to the oval side. I think I'm grabbing more than I should be and it's causing some issues since last year. A good call?

I think so K-Dawg.  I made that switch about four years ago for the same type of problem.  Plus, I bowl alot of games each week, and the extra grab was beating my fingers up.  I haven't even noticed any loss of power, but I don't have any more finger problems now, good luck.

Two things happen when you do this.

Lifts add 1/4 forward to the grip so that is removed.

Plus they add about 1/8" to your span, long spans tear up your fingertips, and probably 50% of bowlers have spans that are too long.

Pinbuster is correct about the span shortening.  All that replied has had good points also.  But if the ball fit so far as span goes fits well, the flip to ovals might give you the impression that the span is now too short. If fit with regards to span is very important, you might have to plug the fingers and lengthen the span a bit.

Thanks for the inputs! Thankfully, I don't have physical problems with the fingers....yet.

I'll experiment with one ball and see where it goes. As for the span, my spare ball is like that so I'm expecting a shortening.

I went the other way K-Dawg (back to Turbo Ice Quad/lift) with appropriate adjustments to span.  I tended to drop occasionally.  It's a mind set thing for me....I'd rather feel like I have to be aggressive thru the shot and get the ball   out and the lane but not grab/hit on it.  Might be semantics.

Have you ever tried Vacu grips?  http://www.viseinserts.com/vacu.html

BTW...nice bowling question/topic!

Some other good things from this are

1.
If you notice that your fingers swell as the night goes on and you end up having trouble getting your fingers into the ball. The switch to the ovals and the removing of the forward in the fingers, can end up making your fingers swell less. This will happen because of the less amount of tension on your finger joins.

2.
You should be able to feel it better at the bottom of your swing when you hit the ball from shot to shot. This should help you repeat your release easier and you should be able to feel it when you over hit or under hit the ball. This in return will let you know when you threw a bad shot, and not just thing the ball didn't work right. This helps when it comes to making adjustments in where you play,  because the last thing you want to do is make an adjustment off a badly thrown shot. This is where alot of guys get lost (myself also) when they bowl. This is one of the best advantages you could see.

Thanks Scott. Nope, haven't tried the vacugrips before, but I hear good things.

My initial thought was based on what I'm seeing over the past season and there first four weeks plus my Demo Day last Sunday. They use oval inserts and I cleared the balls easily with no loss of grip/slippage. I think the change will allow me a cleaner release. A friend suggest I go away from inserts all together because he noticed the same problems three seasons ago even when I was rolling well.

I also changed my release two seasons ago based on some things from Kegel which works until fall '07. I think the lifts are causing me to hang up at release.

Vacugrips FTW.  I can't use regular inserts anymore, they don't feel right.  It took me one night to get used to the Vacugrip feel and I love it.  Much more consistent release with them than regular inserts.

And by the way, my dad just switched from the lifts to the ovals last night and did well with it.  It kept him from over-hitting the ball and made it more controllable and it carried better.
