Hey guys, now I know a lot of people on here can bowl both right and left handed.

My question is, has anyone bowled right handed for a considerable amount of time, then decided to mess around with the left hand and think after some work it may end up better than your right? (I am ambidextrous at most things)

I have been throwing some left handed shots lately and I think this is the case. I just need more practice to get the walk down and the spares. Do I dare cross over to the dark side? Plus, I will never run out of oil if I can play both sides

I am thinking of messing with this all summer to test it out.

Has anyone done this? Did your avg. improve over time?

My father is doing this due to severe knee problems, still working on it but he found it was much easier to switch than to learn to bowl from scratch. He was a 210ish bowler in the 80's and 90's and since the switch has been working his way up to the 190's. He didn't bowl league last year, but in one year, he would probably already average 190.

However, his situation sounds different than yours, as you want to do it strategically, not out of necessity.

Running out of oil would be a moot point since you can't switch hands in a sanctioned league during the series unless there is a league consensus that allows it.

Yeah, I think you have to decide whether you want to bowl right or left handed by the end of practice, and stick with it throughout the night... but this could be interesting, because what if the league allows subs in between games? You have two established averages, so it could count as two seperate bowlers right?

I established book averages both right-handed and left-handed during the 1982-1983 season, and didn't need to purchase multiple sanction cards. Of course, things might be different now...

There was a discussion on Bowl.com about carrying averages with each hand. A bowler claimed he chose to bowl with whichever hand was to his benefit from game to game. Some one from the rules department came on and said that was illegal. They said that once you establish an average either right or left handed in a league you must finish the league with that hand. They did say you could bowl different leagues with different hands in the same season.

The exception is if there is an injury, then with the approval of the league board of directors you may switch hands. The rules are not clear on if the bowler can go back to the original hand if the injury heals. We had the situation in a league I bowled except that the injury occured near the end of one season and was no longer an issue after the new season started. The league approved his going back to his natural hand and the next week we were told we forfeited the games. The secretary said the local associations claimed he could not switch until the season was over.

I started a league lefthanded last year. It was like TP said, they had to vote to let me switch hands in the middle of the year back to my right. I was beginning to think myself that I should just switch period. I've definitely got a lot better shot with my left hand, BUT the accuracy isn't there, and I doubt it ever really would be. I enjoy bowling with my right hand more for some reason.

Oh, as far as the average thing, I averaged 176 for 24 games. I started with like 160-something. Yeah, it'll get better, and did for me pretty quickly. Had a high game of 236 and series of 596. Knowing how to bowl helps a lot too, that's why it goes more quickly than if you're just starting to bowl period.

Where is it specified that you are not allowed to switch hand during the game.
Due to Sportsmanship, I can see the problem but according to the int. rulebook of bowling i can't see the problem. I have seen bowlers switch hand in sanctioned games because a 4-8-10 split is easier to convert with left rather than right hand.

I am aware that your are not allowed to switch hands and stuff liek thta. I just think it would be fun trying to to learn it and maybe switch over someday. Or like some of you said, bowl 2 diff leagues one with each hand. Plus if I was ever injured it wouldn't set me back as bad. I'll just keep practicing. Maybe I'll join a unsanctioned league and try it left handed this summer.

A very good bowler by the name of David Hungate the 2004 PBA Southern Region rookie of the year, is a converted righty to lefty. Very very consistant almost always cashes on every pattern. You can tell by watching he isn't a natural lefty. I have only met him briefly a couple times but the story i hear is back during his league play days some friends picked on him about his bad bowling and said your so bad right handed you might as well switch, he did switch and is better left handed than he ever could have been right handed. Just thought I would share. Also like I said I know he is converted but I don't know the entire story.

RSFF the rules regarding changing delivery are as follows:
Rule 118b

No combination of scores bowled both right and left-handed can be used to compute an average, except as stipulated in Rule 4c. The league board of directors may, by majority vote, adjust a player's average before the player bowls in the league, or durine the season if due to injury or disability. Separate averages must be maintained.

Rule 118d

If because of injury or disability a bowler finds it necessary to change delivery from right to left-handed or vice versa, the league board of directors, by majority vote, may permit the bowler to change delivery. If approval is obtained, the bowler must establish a new average. A bowler may also obtain permission to alternate delivery, due to injury or disability, in accordance with the provisions of Rule 4c.
