Symmetric and Asymmetic cores
« on: November 20, 2008, 12:02:58 AM »
Can anyone explain the differences between the above two cores ? If two balls with the same coverstock, one has a symmetric core and the other have asymmetic core, will the ball reaction be the same ? Will the symmetric core ball has a smoother reaction then the asymmetic core ball ? Why is it that asymmetric ball are always classified as higher end balls the symmetric balls ?

Let me see if i can get close for you, the following assumptions are to be considered in this explanation, Same cover, Same RG, Same Diff and Same drilling (lets use 5 x 45 x 45)

1) The Asy. ball will retain more of its flare potential than the Sym ball.  Sym balls reduce flare by proportional moves of the pin.  (i.e.: a 5 " pin will reduce in theory a Sym balls flare potential by approx 50%)   Assy balls will not reduce the flare as much.

2) Also a assy ball tends to have a more defined hook shape based on its drilling.  Sym ball(s) tend to retain energy a bit longer and is usually slower reaching its PSA, most of the time it is the Thumb hole where as on a Assy ball it will the Mass Bias.

I have one of both and in general the Assy ball flares more with wider seperation between the flares and is a bit stronger where the Sym ball has tighter much closer rings and it is usually a bit longer and later recovery than the assy counterpart

Others will chime in as well i am sure

It's my opinion that symmetrical cores are more forgiving for the average bowler who doesn't release the ball consistently.

An asymmetrical core ball can make you look like a genius when you're throwing it well, and it will tend to "expose" a bad release.

It's nice to have some of each in your arsenal.

There's an article written by Denny Torgerson on this topic in a recent Bowling This Month magazine. To summarize overall reaction, his opinion is that the symmetric core would hook later and more sharply while the asymmetric core would hook sooner with a smoother shape.

From there, IMO, the article goes down hill quickly.

Based on physics a symmetrical core will be smoother overall than an asymmetrical one.  But since I am smart and aware that the PBA's rules on RG, CG, and other characteristics are so strict in range, the core has little effect on reaction when compared to the coverstock.

My smart philosophy.  Any clean reactive coverstock with any solid thought-out core will react 99% the same as any other clean reactive coverstock with any solid thought-out core.

And if any company wants to argue, I will show you a whole paper on this fact.  Or, we can take a robotic arm and test various balls and then overlap them.  Same speed, rev's, release etc. on the same exact lane.  I am so sick of seeing ball reviews and videos of different bowlers making a ball look better or worse than it is and then comparing that to another ball that does the same thing.

If the limits were less strict, then obviously balls WOULD BE DIFFERENT.  But since they keep getting more strict, every company is producing the same garbage.
