Does one or the other lend itself to particular styles ? Fast , high rev or slower medium revs, etc....

Not really. It is more condition specific. As a general rule, if the backends are very clean and dry, symmetric will smooth out the reaction. Asyms will normally give you a stronger backend reaction.
