Synthetic heads and Wood backends...
« on: April 06, 2004, 11:32:10 PM »
Anyone know how the ball reacts differently than from all wood or guardian heads?

With syn. heads it clears them a bit easier, with less backend reaction on the wood (depending on oil layout) but overall, you will get more backend on syn. backs. As for gaurdian heads, Im not sure, never bowled on it.

AM not A CHICK OF BOWLING but I wanted to be in Manda's clique And why would I "saw" pins in half, THATS A WASTE OF PINS! I'd rather blow it over with my storm, and 21mph ball speed on dry shots.

Guardian is softer and will cause the ball to roll sooner.

Constantine is correct.  One of the worst synthetic surfaces, in my opinion.

I just bowled a tournament last weekend, syn fronts to just past the arrows, old wood backs,..and all covered with Guardian. Hated it. I felt like the ball  was in slow motion through the heads, and would actually hook before it got to the arrows,...The mids had a lot of hook, and the backends went away in practice,..LOFT, and straight played good on the right,...soft hook and agressive equipment was a no-no...up the boards, and in the track was the key.

I bowl on this all the time. The lanes have wood aproaches, AMF synthetic heads (to about 20 feet), and wood mids and backs, new AMF pin decks.

My reaction: Clean through the heads almost to the point where it "squirts" through the front. Nice midlanes when fresh oil, they tend to get really toasted fast as the oil disappears. The back ends are really strong until the oil starts carrying down in the middle of the first game, then they mellow a bit. I would say that on this type of surface my ball retains energy like on a synthetic lane and explodes on the back end like wood lanes. It's really a pretty nice set-up. I especially like that they kept the wood approach.
