Youth Bowling
« on: October 31, 2004, 10:11:45 AM »
I'm trying to figure these kids out.  We have our Saturday morning YABA league with about 20 kids bowling.  Is it a public school thing that keeps them from being teachable.  I mean, here I am a card-holding PBA bowler who has a ton of good information to give these people, but do they take anything I say into practice?  Nope.  It's just same old same-old.  I would give up any award I've won to date to have had coaching from a pro like they have access to for a measley 8 bucks a week.

I wish we had a coach in our league.  We have nothing.  Wait, nevermind, I won't even get started in my rant about satan's palace.....(don't ask).

Bones has a point.  If they have no reason to be there, they will just see how much fun they can have, and not bother with instruction or anything.  Kinda like when you try to teach a little kid a sport, they aren't gonna listen to any of the rules, and do what they want.

being a junior bowler i know exactly what you guys are talking about.  i am a bowler who appreciates the advice and whenever i have the chance i pick the brains of those bowlers who are considered to be the great ones in our area.  i have the fortunes of one of them instructing me all the time due to his son who is six bowling in a league at the same time.  people will only learn if they have an open mind and want to learn.

we do have a coach, a coach named jack, but jack isnt a very good bowler. Most of the time I see him bowl he is in the 160's, 170's, basically no higher then me. From my point of view, hes not a real good coach. Some people have good info and are bad bowlers, that could be the case.

BK, he's not a real coach.  I, saying this with confidence, have heard him "analyze" people, and I can safely say I could do better to help them.  Saying things such as "move the ball on the first step" and "stay down at the line" is the limit of his knowledge.  He tells me and other people (like backspin jersey jake) that were' doing things right when I KNOW we're not.  I'd be really scared if he was certified.

Pin-nut, would you like to come visit and give me some coaching?

See my other post.  He's not a very good coach.  He tries to be nice rather than say what's true.  Or perhaps, he doesn't know what is wrong?

That depends on how far away you are from my locale and how much $$$ you have.

Sawbones:

Since we can blame it on the teaching, I suppose I am paying for coming into the program in the 5th week.  When I stopped by and started listening to what the kids were getting from their coaches, I was hearing things like: "You pulled it."  "Don't throw it in the gutter!"  "You came in too light."

What kind of coaching is that?  So I come over and give a kid a technique for converting the 7 pin.  He tries it and succeeds (Then he comes back the following week and forgets my advice).  This past Saturday I told (and told)a kid, "You have to learn to keep that shoulder up.  I can't teach you anything else until you fix that problem."  We'll see where he is next week.

I have about 3 out of the 20 in this group that I see some possibilities with.  Those are the ones with whom I will spend my time.  Everyone else gets a clap, a high five, and a pat on the back until they ask for my help.
