synthetics vs wood
« on: October 14, 2006, 10:25:46 AM »
How do you guys tend to attack these lanes. I'm a synthetics baby and this is what I see for the most part. I believe that I'll be traveling to a center tomorrow that has wooden lanes. Do you guys tend to bring things that will give you more length? I have a weird feeling that the oil will move rather quickly or soak in quickly. Hell I've even considered ditching the newer stuff and breaking out my Enforcer, Track Heat 2 solid and Pearl. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks in advance.

Take something that goes long. I just shot on wood after a year lay off. My Rampage matched really well as it didnt hook too soon.

I usually just take my normal equipment.  I usually end up using the less agressive balls (Xception, Heat, Heat Blast, and Desert Heat) because of the way that the lanes breakdown.  If I am going to a tourney and I know that they have wooden lanes I usually break my old Blue Urethane Track Enforcer along with me as well.

Around here there is a good mix of each. Wood usually means drying tendencies and synthetics more carrydown. Usually carry something that rolls more for wood as most houses put enough head oil out but baceknds get dried out. Most of the local synthetic houses put out less volume so i tend to like weaker balls or ones that go-longer with more pop when chasing the moving oil.

the three bowling centers in my association are all wood. one has 44 year old lanes. one has 40 lanes with 18 of them being 47 years old and the other 22 being 30 years old----all of them having laneshield. the other centers lanes are 37 years old. they are all about average condition considering their age. i use the same equipment for these lanes as i do for tournaments that have synthetic lanes. you have to know when to use what piece of equipment. wooden lanes that are this old have probably absorbed as much oil as they ever will. as you bowl the oil will be moved on the lanes or absorbed by the ball. the friction level for cleaned wooden lanes is very high---but so are synthetics. you may need duller equipment for synthetics due to the lane surface being smoother.
