Please give me your serious opinions.
« on: May 08, 2004, 11:27:39 PM »
I was thinking about this last night, and think it may help me alot. I really sat down and thought about how I have been getting WAAYYY to "technical" in the game, and focusing more on that then the game and execution and I think this is messing me up really bad. I was thinking about selling all of my equipment, except for my plastic ball, and just buying one strong pearl ball and a bottle of polish so I can polish it for lighter oil so I can get it to push a little farther down the lane and play deeper. Maybe something like the XXX, also I was thinking about trying a Lane #1, I really want to try them. Give me your opinions.

I would say no...  You can use the plastic to practice with if you want, but it is nice to have different strength equipment to use for varying lane conditions.  Work on the execution in practice, and learn how to use your increased accuracy / ability to repeat shots with every ball you own.  If you throw the ball the same way every time, it will be easier to either 1) adjust the line to what you're throwing or 2) know when to use a weaker/stronger ball for the condition you're facing.

Somewhere there's a balance.  To be truly successful these days you will need that technical data to back up your mechanics.  Good luck!

Uh, well if you sell your stuff, wait until the tourney is done, so we don't lose.

You know, I'm thinking of just bowling the summer league with plastic, to improve my accuracy and shot making skills.  I don't know, it depends on how the first couple weeks go.

Well, whatever you do, I wanna have a look if you buy the XXXL!!  Besides, it will fill a spare/dry lane ball category for the "ever so important" arsenal issue.

If i don't use just plastic, I'm bringing one ball to any given time.

Oh, btw, don't sell your stuff unless you plan on quitting or something.  Or you can give it to me for $5.

No see my problem is I switch equipment way too often and dont know what I should use for what, so I figure if I get one strike ball, and use it down and in on heavier shots, and deeper on more dry shots I should get my feel back. I personally think I did better with one ball, besides for spares but now I have a spare ball so thats not an issue. And then from there, after I get my "groove" back I can figure out what balls I need. Still want your opinions.

I would not sell my equipment if I were you. The best thing to do is practice with it, get an idea of what each ball does......and WHY you would want to switch. If you upgrade your equipment too often and do not really have an idea of what you have and WHY, then it could definately be detrimental. The purpose of having alot of equipment is to have more TOOLS in your toolbox. If you are using a flat head screwdriver and you need to be using a pair of pliers you are in bad shape!!! Go out, practice, do not worry about your scores, simply watch your ball reaction and the difference in each ball.

Without a doubt it can hurt your game if you think too much. I have done this in the past. What usually happened is I would start thinking.......and before I knew it the night would be over and I was in no better position than when I first started thinking. THINKING is good, don't get me wrong. But you need to think about the right thing.

FOR ME, what I would do once I realized I was thinking too much is just set my feet get into my starting position and go! No thinking, no self talk, nothing. This has brought me back many times when I started thinking too much.

I also would not be in a hurry to sell the various equipment that you have in your bag. Use practice sessions and watch carefully how each ball reacts in heavy oil, medium oil and light to no oil- taking into account which balls also work best for you when carrydown hits. Bring a little notebook and jot down these thoughts so that you can get a better understanding of what each ball does for your game and then you'll trust your instincts better for when you bowl on these various conditions.

I also agree that you need to do all of your thinking before you hit the approach and pick up your ball. Too much thinking as you set and deliver will cause your game to go downhill IMO...trust your instincts and abilities and your scores will improve.

BK25,

I will say it again, keep your equipment.  The technical side of this game is okay to learn but you need the basics first.  I am not saying that you don't have skills you just need to refine the ones you have first.

My advice is this; pick a old or new (if you got the money) urethane ball.  Learn to bowl with it, I mean really learn to bowl.  Reactive resin gives you so much area, urethane will bridge that gap between reactive and plastic.  Urethane will still allow you a few boards of error, please don't think you will have to be pin point accurate.

When you are practicing, think about what you are doing.  When you are bowling, tell yourself, "hey, I've taught myself to do this, relax and let it go".  During practice you are hopefully teaching yourself good muscle memory.  So, when the lights come on all you have to do is roll the rock baby.

Good luck to you,
Andrew

PS Learn your equipment.  Don't replace it until you do.  Learn which one will hook the most, least, earliest, latest?  You should be able to pick out any ball you own and hit the pocket with it the first time, provided you know the pattern.

Hey BK,

Like the others are saying, don't waste your money and sell off your equipment(sorry a_ak57).  I do however agree with Agroves on throwing a urethane or even your plastic but "learn to really bowl".  Once you develop a strong consistent repetitive motion, it won't matter what's in your hand(to a certain degree) but you should end up scoring much more consistently with a better reaction from all your equipment.  Hope this helps and good luck bud....

Well, guys he's not fed up or anything, he just wants to improve. Besides, we aren't exactly bowling on a THS (yes I know this)....

Well, I know 2 balls are light, his bruisr hooks way to early, and the slayr is too over/under, so i think that's his reasoning....2 useless balls, and 2 with bad reactions.

this reminds me of a thread I wanted to create...
