Tackling carrydown on THS
« on: June 15, 2004, 08:40:48 AM »
Man the past couple of weeks the carrydown issues I've been having while bowling my summer league have been baffling me. I don't know how far down the lane they oil and buff to, but based on what I see it's a definite short oil pattern on wood lanes, with a flood from 10 to 10 and significantly drier outside 10 to 1. I would hazard a guess at the ratio being 50-60 units inside of 10 and probably 15 to 20 units outside of 10. I'm usually the only lefty on my pair and I've been playing 9 at the laydown point, crossing 5 board at the arrows out to 3 or 4 at breakpoint. The first game this evening was 189 with a 4 bagger at the end, my 2 split leaves caused by lower ball speed (4-6 and a 4-6-7-10). The second game I made a minor 2/1 adjustment at the start, as I noticed the 6 pin being last to go in the 12th of the 1st game. I started with a strike, rang a 7 pin, then went off the sheet til leaving another 7 pin in the 11th. A clean 269 game. I didn't make an adjustment in game 3 and started with a 2 bagger, followed by a 7 pin. From there it seemed like the ball was skidding through the breakpoint and any adjustment I made with feet, speed or target didn't work. I left a couple of 3-6-9 combinations, two 7 pins, one 10 pin and a 3-9. Made all spares outside of a 7 pin miss in the 10th for a 183. Shot 641 for the night with one great game and two ok games. I used my Eraser Pearl Particle the whole night- layout for the ball is in my profile.

Anything special you would have done differently when the carrydown hit? Should I have switched balls? Should I bring my El Nino Wrath (which is the one ball I leave behind) to combat this carrydown? Any help/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Matt

There are a few ways to combat carrydown....I prefer to move outside of the carrydown area with my breakpoint and use a ball with a polished surface. Some people like to move inside of it.

One option I would consider is keeping the same line and trying a ball that is sanded down a bit. Doing this may actually allow you to (being a lefty) move right a little bit and still have a strong finish on the ball.

Bowler72: You may have hit on something. When my ball speed increases as it did a little the last game I think I was getting a higher back swing- which probably caused me to throw through the break point. I will try to pay more attention to that next time.

Two other things that may contribute to the changing conditions: 1) we start with 10 minutes of practice. I can usually get in about 10 shots on 10 minutes of practice, and I would say 7 of those 10 shots are playing the same line I plan on playing during my 3 games. Would it more effective to play to the right of this line 2 or 3 boards so as to not effect my line longer during league play?

2) The league I bowl in is an adult junior league. Some of the teams we bowl against have kids that use bumpers, and typically go from one side of the bumper to the other and back again. How much of this do you think could effect the mid lanes by games two and three?

Figured I would put these ideas out there...
