Summer leagues usually do not count unless league rules allow for it.

Check out rule 53.  A summer average is an official average for league, handicapping and tournament purposes.....

Rule 53 is for awards. Leagues themselves usually do not use summer averages for entering averages.
quote:
118c. League Entering Average

Entering averages are determined by league rules. A bowler who does not have an entering average or until they meet the requirement(s) defined by league rule(s), average is determined by dividing the total number of pins by the total number of games bowled the first league session. (See Rule 100g for handicap.) When a bowler fails to complete his/her first game in order to establish an average, the frames bowled will be declared null and void and a vacancy score used.

NOTE:  The following are options for entering averages:

Highest Average – The highest average in any USBC league in which a player competes in one season.

Composite Average – The average of a bowler who bowls in two or more USBC leagues in a season. The average is determined by adding the total pins for all of the leagues and dividing the result by the total number of games bowled in those leagues.

As others have said, most leagues do not include summer averages.

The reason is that most, if not all associations do not compile a summer average book.  That leaves the only way to verify summer averages is through Bowl.com and not all centers have internet access at the desk or available during leagues.

I think summer league averages used to be an accepted average of last resort.

Everyone recognized that with the short season, smaller team sizes, and the tendancy for houses to put out easy shots in the summer that summer averages could be highly inflated.

So unless a winter league average was unavailable summer league averages were not used.

Entering averages are determined by leagues rules. I posted the rule above. Mac. What does your league rules state?

Most leagues do not reconize summer leagues if you have a winter league average.

i.e.
 2006-07 winter avg 198 101 gms
 2007-08 winter avg 201 98 gms
 2008 summer avg    210 21 gms

Entering avg should be 201, not 210.

states use last years yearbook average, if none use the last sanctioned average. thats word for word. i have a sub that came into the league with no yearbook last year but had a summer average the year before. No "winter" yearbook since 05-06 due to surgery on his elbow. the summer average is a 186 due to lack of strength in elbow but the winter average is 221 and they are forcing him to use that average.

Disqualification for not knowing your entering average? Thats really odd.

Unless you do it on purpose to move down in divisions or something, all they will do here is verify your average and change your handicap as necessary.
