Tape Insert Tool
« on: March 24, 2009, 06:00:47 PM »
Just curious what you guys use to insert tape in your ball if anything.  I had one of those little knives which I think was made by Vise but I lost it.  I'm trying to think of something else that's similar to replace it.  Preferrably cheap, like from the Dollar Store lol.

1/8" slotted screwdriver with about a 3" - 4" stem.
I use it to apply tape, get tape out, remove inserts, put shims in the back of inserts, remove cleats from my shoes, etc., etc.

Here's the eBay item I'm talking about. Works great:

Why on God's green earth would you put tape inside the great feel of a finger insert? It makes no sense. Been there, will never ever do that again.
Putting a shim between the insert and the back edge of the hole is infinitely simpler and easier to remove and insert.

Beats me. I think I would have chosen a nicer picture to sell my product (you can't even SEE the product in that shot).

I used it to tape thumbholes Tuesday night in league and it works great. Better than the Master tool, for sure.

I have a reply to the post stating the following..
"Why on God's green earth would you put tape inside the great feel of a finger insert? It makes no sense. Been there, will never ever do that again.

I'm the maker of that product and here's the enitre ad, you'll be able to gather that the photo was to illustrate the small diameter of the tool.

One of the keys to better bowling and better scoring is a good grip. Now you can have a great fitting ball not just in the thumb ..but in the fingers as well, WITHOUT adding shims.

Our unique Patient Pending Tape insert tool is unlike any other. Made from a blend of rubber and plastics this sturdy tool is a breeze to use. Just peel the tape, and apply the top edge of your tape to the curved portion of the tool, insert , press and remove. That's it!

This tool will fit any size bowling ball thumb or finger hole.

I developed this tool to be a no brainer to use. Small children can use this..no sharp edges or points.
Fit's on your key ring for easy access.

I was a YABA Gold coach for 25 years and the size of some of the kids thumbs were like my fingers, therefore the tool needed to fit in our size holes.

I hope the reply was satisfactory.

That shot was selected because it showed the small size of the tool without revealing the basic design.
If someones going to copy it, they'll have to buy 1.

BTW if anyone here wants one $3.00 ea delivered.

I have no problems with your product. Works like a charm (I bought one from you about 2-3 weeks back on eBay, same username as here).

But for a couple of weeks, I didn't buy one because I couldn't tell from the picture whether your item was too much like the Master tool or not. I don't particularly like the Master. I finally figured that for $3.87 I wouldn't lose much if it was.

I don't know how you could display it without giving the design away. But I'd try another angle/different lighting if it was me.

I'll make an effort to get a better picture in the ad.
Our tool was designed and produced in 1988, long before the Master or the Bowlers Tape tool. We sold them by the car load back then. Companies like Western Bowling Supply , Cal bowling Supply, and Star Distribution bought thousands of these. We also produced a revloving counter display that held 10 of each color.( back then we had 8 colors)
In 1992 we sold out and the "business was just abandoned"..a few months ago I found a box I didn't know I had..and put an ad on Ebay. If anyone here is interested in distributing or reselling these, please contact me and we'll make you a sweet deal.
I do appreciate all the comments and feedback..
BTW nice place you have here.

the maker,

Having used inserts for a long time and having finger that swell and shrink as I bowl, I have used lots of implements, tape and shims.

I understand why you used the scene to portray how easy it is to use, but I disagree most strenuously with the concept of putting tape inside a vinyl/silicone insert. It is far too easy for the tape to slip inside the insert or for the bowler to push the tape out of position because most tape glue sticks very poorly to soft inserts. Once they start sliding around, the glue gets all over the bowler's fingers, messing up everything. I think it is bad idea to even show this as an option. Too many people will try this without giving it a second thought, solely because they saw it.

To reduce the size of inserts, shims are an infinitely safer and better idea in the long and the short run. You can probably use your tool, where I use a small slotted screwdriver. That is probably just fine. It might even work better. The price certainly makes it worth the test trial, to say the least.

Maybe you could just show inserting tape into a small woman's ring finger hole that doesn't have an insert.

I've cut narrow piece from a 2 liter pop bottle and used that. Easy to curve the tape and get it lined before setting it.

I'm by no means suggesting putting grip tape into a gripped finger hole.
As most of you, I tried many methods of getting tape into my thumb hole, keys, tweezers, screwdrivers, knife blades. I found that for me..the car key worked best...however
At the time I was working with kids and they have the smallest thumbs, so getting tape in the holes was always a time demanding chore that also wasted a lot of tape (sticks together)so I built a prototype to use on the kids balls.
It evolved some and I was constantly asked to "sell me one"..so I did a patent search, found a die maker to make a mold and went from there.
