Tape Issues?
« on: December 09, 2004, 07:35:31 AM »
I use the thick white tape in most of my balls. I have problems with it wanting to come out a lot. I have actually thrown the ball and had a piece of tape come out at the same time. Is this normal? Is it b/c I am putting tape, over tape? I assume tapes stickyness could go bad, but couldn't I then glue it back? What do you guys suggest? No sugestions on buying new tape! LMK. Thanks.

Personally, I tend to use black and I'm always so paranoid about NOT being able to put tape in the ball that I instruct my driller to open up the thumb hole quite a bit, so this may not work for you, but what I usually end up doing is use super glue on the first piece of tape that I put in the ball, then when I layer the rest of the tape, the chances of it sliding out are much slimmer. Rarely has that first piece ever needed to come out, and the 1-2 times that it has, I've had to open the thumbhole up more up anyway

Well you may simply need to replace the tape? How long has it been in there? Tape does loose its stickiness, specially if you sweat. I would say just buy a new box of tape, its like 4 bucks. Dont re use old tape, its just dumb unless you take it out to adjust it. Even at that, only do it once or MAYBE twice. Dont glue it back in though.

and yes, you have to buy new tape! Why dont you want to? Its not a big deal, its 4 bucks for like 30 pieces! And if both of you are seriously having that much trouble with tape flying out, you need to learn to not grip the ball so dam hard!!!

He might have black tape that is technically white in his thumbholes if his tape is that old. LOL.

I replace my tape every time I bowl. If there's a squad in the morning and then match play later that afternoon. Match play round will have me a fresh set of tape in the balls I plan on using, just like it did in the morning.

The tape is not old. I just continually have to keep pushing it down. Also, my grip pressure has improved a lot over the last few months. I do not grab the ball near as much as I used to; so I would say thats not the problem.

Solution is .....

NEW Tape! hahaha

Thanks to all who replied.

What about the moisture of your hand? Sometimes when I have to bowl in places, like FL, that have high humidity, the tape does not stick as well as it should.

Sometimes the inside of the hole isn't completely dry from oil/moisture and/or clean. Get a bevel sander, sand a layer of the surface of the hole and apply the tape as usual on a clean, dry surface.

I am planning on taking a fine grit sand paper to my thumb slugs. I picked up my drillers ball and I loved the feel. He sands it out with fine grit.

The tape was only in there... Umm... I am honestly not sure. Is a month or two a long time for tape?

Oh, and the reason I asked about a possibility of glueing the tape down was b/c I bought a ball from a guy who had glued the tape down. It seemed effective but it took a good amount of rubbing alcohol and scrubbing to get the stickyness out of there.  Just thought it may be worth a try. For my worn out tape. hahah

It would be a lot cheaper, and a LOTT less hassle to just buy new tape.

i use 1500 grit sandpaper on the thumbslugs(if you want it smoother, wetsand w/1500)...i have my driller go a little wide on thumb hole and use tape to make it feel right...i had four pieces in a ball he was looking at and the next ball he drilled to be right for my thumb and you had to use a crowbar to get it off....so i had him widen it a bit and i will put tape in it later.

btw i cant stand black tape and thus i only use white...my skin seems to stick to black tape more

When I was running the pro shop in the local center I had many people come in with the same problem. Normally this was with the regular white tape most shops carry. Never figured out any miracle solution, but did find a great glue remover. I kept a can of the shoe disenfectant they used at the counter, they were using Lysol at the time. Just sprayed it into the hole and wiped out the glue. The tape I found that had the best glue was Gator Tape. I was using their textured tape as a base under a piece of black tape at one time. You had to pry that stuff out of the hole if you wanted it out. Their regular cloth tape still would leave glue, but not as bad as the "Bowlers Tape". Other than that most of the time it just seems you have to change the white tape out and clean the surface more often than the black.

Goo Be Gone or any of the other similar citrus based cleaners also does a good job of removing tape residue.  After cleaning, I wipe the hole with rubbing alcohol to remove the slick feeling the Goo Be Bone leaves.  --  JohnP
