Missing outside?
« on: February 11, 2011, 02:20:05 AM »
What are possible causes of throwing the ball wide of target? I've been doing it a lot lately. I try to slow me feet but it doesn't seem to help too much. What are other possible causes?

Everyone's different to some degree, but things that usually cause me to miss wide:

1) Pushaway goes too far to the left, causing a figure-8 motion that sends the ball right. This is useful when I want to get in and hook it, but not if I'm trying to play more direct.

2) Turn my hand too early.

3) Body rotates right during my approach, particularly on the slide step.

4) Timing goes awry somehow, resulting in getting off-balance during my approach, or getting to the foul line early or late.

5) Losing balance because I lean too far forward with my body.

...And that's just some of the reasons for me.

I think I turn my body at the line, because my trailing foot goes too far behind my slide leg. I've tried to not get it over as far but it's hard. I think I open my shoulder too much at the line, causing me to miss my mark. Possible?

Do you open your shoulders during your delivery? If so, you might not be getting them closed at the foul line, that will cause you to miss wide.

They are open. How do I keep more square? I was told that my trailing leg goes too far to the left, causing my right shoulder to open.

You just have to practice squaring it up at the bottom of your swing. There is nothing wrong with opening your shoulders in the back swing, it can give you more power with a higher back swing. But if the shoulders are still open at the bottom of your swing and release, it can make you miss right.

You can try using the non-throwing arm as a counter to it, just make a somewhat straight line with your shoulders and the non-throwing arm. As your swing starts down, bring your non-throwing arm 90 degrees to the line you are aiming for, that will square up your shoulders. For an example of this, find a video of Chris Barnes, that is how his delivery works for the most part.

You should find someone to help you with this. Good coaching never hurts!

See anything that could be causing me to miss wide?

If your arm gets away from your body at approach, this can cause missing wide..

"Gets away" meaning swing goes away from body.

As in right of my body? Because don't you want to push the ball out and let gravity do its job?

Yes because if your swing gets away from your body you will have the tendency to bring the ball behind your back and then you will not be able to come STRAIGHT threw the ball and miss outside.
That is as best as I can explain it. Hope this helps.

Correct, right of your body. But the swing "should" go straight forward and straight back. Gravity wont "pull" the ball to your right.

Best thing for you is find a good Coach. It will save you a lot of time and Frustration. It is hard to coach someone by there impressions of what the bowler things is right or wrong. In CA there is Mark Baker in Santa Ana Should Take less than a Half day session for any good coach to help out. It will be worth every penny if you search him out. After I worked with Fred Borden & Ron Hatfield My game excelled by from 202 to 225 THS, on sport shot 188 to 205. So find a good coach. I am a Silver level Coach myself and I go to Fred or Ron at least once a year. To make sure they tweak my game.
