Tape question
« on: March 06, 2013, 09:38:35 PM »
A question for tape users. I use standard white tape in the front of my
thumb hole and black tape on the back of my thumb hole. Lately I've purchased
Master,AMF and Storm tape from the pro shop. Unfortunately it seems the surface
of this new tape has a very tacky feel on all 3 brands, which causes my thumb to
hang up. A Hammer staffer has been nice enough to give me some of his Ebonite
brand to hold me over. I looked at the Ebonite tape in the pro shop yesterday,
and it feels to to be tacky as well. It appears all brands are similar in appearance,
so I'm assuming (1) manufacturer makes it for all the companies. Anybody else
see this or have the same issues I am? Is there anything I can do with the 50
pieces of "tacky" strips I have in my bag?
Thanks for any thoughts you might have.

I was thinking the same thing with a higher grit sandpaper, or some skin patch. I am lately hanging up with all of my thumbs because of this new tape. I have to back off a few pieces more just to get out. And the HADA is expensive !

I know from my own experience with texture tape in back of thumb plus the skin/thumb tapes placed on the back of the thumb. You will even have more trouble getting out of the thumb due to the roughness of the white tape with the texture of the skin tape. That is why I sand down the white texture tapes. Trust me the white tape become much smoother one you sand it down lightly.

Don't be afraid to use some fine sandpaper and lightly sand the white texture tape. It will remove some of the texture/roughness on the tape but still maintain it's thickness. I usually do that on some of my thumb holes especially during the summer months.

sounds good, will give that a try, thank you

I am having this same problem with the sticky feeling at the top part of the tape. It really makes the tape unusable. I just bought some last week and I thought that maybe it was just that batch. Will sanding take the tackiness away though. I don't know what else to do, I need a little grip in the front that is why I use the white tape. Has anyone contacted ebonite or any of the other companies yo ask them about it.

Try sanding it.  If it is still too tacky for you, PM me your address and I will send you some of the Franken Tape to try.

Nocarey, did that work for you?  If not, my offer will extend to you too.

From what I understand, one company makes the white tape for all brands. The latest batches of white tape all seem to have that stickier than usual feel. I find this to be very undesirable as well.

I have heard the same complaint from other bowlers in the area. They all use the same supplier and they all switched and all the new tape is very tacky.

Now I have a flock of vultures around me and my 500 ct. roll I got last year :) .

This new white tape is awful. I'm down to about 20 pieces of my old ebonite tape and I'm starting to panic...lol.

I was told by Ace Mitchell that it is a mistake they know about, but it's still out there. I also spoke to Vise, and they said theirs is also made by the same manufacturer, but with a little different process. I tried it, and it is better, but still too tacky.

It's amazing how you don't hear more complaints about how different this tape is.

I contacted Storm and they claim they all use the same supplier.  According to Storm, changes in manufacturing have happened but are still not as good as the original.  In addition to it being more abrasive, I find the new adhesive makes the tape more difficult to remove.

I had considered going back to Curity white tape and cutting myself like I did in the old days but that seemed like a step back.

Since I use white in the back, I switched to magic carpet and, so far, am pleased with the feel.
