Tape question

A question for tape users. I use standard white tape in the front of my
thumb hole and black tape on the back of my thumb hole. Lately I've purchased
Master,AMF and Storm tape from the pro shop. Unfortunately it seems the surface
of this new tape has a very tacky feel on all 3 brands, which causes my thumb to
hang up. A Hammer staffer has been nice enough to give me some of his Ebonite
brand to hold me over. I looked at the Ebonite tape in the pro shop yesterday,
and it feels to to be tacky as well. It appears all brands are similar in appearance,
so I'm assuming (1) manufacturer makes it for all the companies. Anybody else
see this or have the same issues I am? Is there anything I can do with the 50
pieces of "tacky" strips I have in my bag?

When I get some that is tacky like that, I will run a finger of my non bowlong hand across my fore head. The wipe it lightly on my bowling thumb. It will take a bit of the tack away.

I use a piece of Franken Tape on top of the white tape in the front part of the thumbhole.  You can adjust the positioning of the Franken Tape to allow less or more of the white tape for gripping purposes.

You should be more clear. Is it the various brands of black tape that now feel more tacky???

If so, please follow MI 2 AZ's advice. Valentino's Franken tape (black only) is markedly different from everyone else's black tape. Its feel is different and its glue is VERY different: extremely easy to place and to remove.

Charlest - I am having trouble with the white tape. I like the texture (white) for grip
and then use the black tape to snug the fit. The Ebonite tape that was given to
me came off of a roll and the Ebonite tape I looked at in the pro shop was in
a 10-pack. Thanks for the repiles.

Are you sure the Ebonite tape you tried wasn't there Ultra Magic Wrape?  It's a lot smoother and thinner than the regular white tape you are referring to.  It is also easy to stretch across your finger.  Both this and the Franken tape are good alternatives

I had assumed that he was talking about the white tape, but the Franken Tape would have worked for the black tape as well since it is a black tape itself, but very thin.  Because it is thin and somewhat slick, I use it on top of any white tape I place in the front part of the thumbhole.  By varying the position of the Franken Tape, which is easy to do since the Franken Tape can be removed several times and easily replaced without losing its stickiness on the adhering side, I can adjust how much of the white tape is exposed for my gripping purpose. 

I was thinking that if his white tape was too tacky for him, he could use the Franken Tape on top of it, thereby reducing the amount of tackiness he is feeling.  It may or may not work for him, but he can try the Franken Tape for free so he is not losing anything by trying.

Nicklo13 - Thanks for the post, but that was not the tape he gave me. I have seen
guys using that type of tape on their fingers and thumbs before though.

I too have seen this tacky issue arise on my newest 500 ct. roll of Ebonite 1" white.

With a "cobra head" type thumb I use an oval thumb insert and layers of tape on the front(2) and back(3-5 depending on the season) of the thumb.  For now I'm lucky to have some of the old Ebonite white tape I can put on the top of the new layers.  But eventually I'll need to get some non tacky white once I run out of the old stuff.

OK.
When I tried various brands of white tape a few years back, I found them very different from  one another; so I do not believe that they all have them made by the same manufacturer.

Some brands do have special high grit surfaces on some white tape for extra grip. One calls this version Gator tape. Otherwise, the various white tapes have different degrees of roughness and, therefore friction. I stuck with Master Tape's white tape as very middle of road with good glue characteristics.

Vise Hada Patch and absolutely love it.

From what I understand, one company makes the white tape for all brands. The latest batches of white tape all seem to have that stickier than usual feel. I find this to be very undesirable as well.

I heard that 3M is making all bowling tape now. That's why all the pricing is almost identical and the feel is exact.

Don't be afraid to use some fine sandpaper and lightly sand the white texture tape. It will remove some of the texture/roughness on the tape but still maintain it's thickness. I usually do that on some of my thumb holes especially during the summer months.
