Sometimes bowling really makes me scratch my head. I'm trying to get a tighter thumb hole and I think I'm making progress. I put my hand in a ball I threw last year with a thumb hole of 1 1/32 . It has 4 sticks of 1" white tape. So how thick is a stick of 1" tape ? How much am I changing the size of the thumb hole ?
Now from that I went to a 15/16 oval thumb. I really had a lot of hang problems with an oval. How in the world do you take an oval hole and try to get a comparable round size thumb hole ?
My latest drilling has a 1" round thumb hole. In the evening I need about 4 sticks of 3/4 inch tape or 2 one inch and 1 3/4 inch. I always use white tape. In the morning I have to take out 2 or three sticks of tape out.
So all in all it looks like I'm bowling with a thumb hole about 1/32 smaller. Not sure how much progress that is. Is 1/32 really that big a difference ?

White tape is .20000 of an inch thick(Got a friend who is a machinest,already had this talk with him).I start out with 1 piece of 3/4"wide an finish with up to 4 on front pad of thumb an 2-1/4" strips on side of thumb.I've thought about buying stock in a tape company to recoup some of my monies

That can't be right because 1/64 of an inch is .0156 . You must have made a typo.

hmmm So if I calculate this correctly .... 3 sticks of white 1 " tape = 1/64 of an inch because the circumference of the hole is about 3 inches.

Got a kick out of this one. I knew it had to be a typo, but it was still funny thinking that someone thought white tape was 1/5 of an inch thick ( .2= 2/10= 1/5 ). At that rate, 5 pices would have been an inch thick!

Now, .015 I could believe

Consequently, 1/64 of an inch = .015625, thusly, if tape is .015 inches in thickness, 3 pieces would be .045 inches thick, or approximately 3/64 of an inch thick, which is.046875. With three pieces of tape, you are decreasing the dimension of the hole just a fraction less than 3/64

For me, it isn't always totally about the size of the hole, but the friction I get prior to release. I prefer the white tape, not so much because of the thickness, but because of the rough surface of the tape and the friction it provides.

Hey jugger... I think you are missing the fact that you are only putting a piece of tape in about 1/3 of the hole. Think of it this way. If you put tape in the thumb covering the inside wall of the thumb hole perfectly without overlaping you will decrease the hole by 1/64. This is because the tape is about 1/64. But that 1/64th needs to cover the entire hole to reduce the hole by 1/64th.

Tape thinkness varies from manufacture to manufacture. It may even vary within one manufacture depending on where they acquire the material from. I learned this when we were in negotiations to by a well known tape distributor. Note they did not make the tape only the cartridge it went into. Where and how you place the tape makes a huge difference. Drill bits are round. Thumbs are NOT!

I understand what you are saying but you are incorrect. If you go all the way around the hole with the 1/64th of an inch piece of tape it is going to cut the hole down 1/32nd. You are losing 1/64th on each side which will decrease the diameter by 2 pieces of tape and the radius by one piece. Since diameter is the measurement used it would be 2/64th which is 1/32nd.

Is the 15/16 a premade sleeve or is your driller doing a pilot hole & elongating by milling?

? Possibly the sleeve is not aligned correctly to allow the cleanest release?? Or if it is premade, it may not be the correct length/thickness of your thumb without a custom fit by milling.

You are right about that. I thought of this later. To tell you the truth I'm a little skeptical that a piece of white tape is 1/64 inch thick. Have a feeling its less than 1/64.

The oval was done by milling. I just remember it was done with different size drill bits and the driller moving the ball incrementally.
