I use tape sometimes to help with the feel of the ball.  It all depends on if the house is cold or super warm inside.  If it's colder out in the winter, I will sometimes throw a piece of coarse texture tape in the thumb.  Other times, smooth texture.  Just depends on the day.  Most times, I don't need it though.  I'm all for using it if the need comes up.

You can put tape in the back or the front of the thumb hole (or the sides). You can use rough white or smooth black. There are different thicknesses for each and different "feels" for each.

You have to have something to adjust for swelling and shrinkage, unless you are a robot. Every human's extremities shrink and swell, to one degree or another ,with the seasons, with changing temperatures and humidity and with food type and amount and with age.

You can use tape or other devices in the holes or on your thumb. Not every solution is right for everyone. You should some and see what results you get.

I used to use only black smooth tape in the back or the front of the thumb hole. One day I ran out and needed some. I had never liked the feel of white tape at all, ever!!I borrowed a piece of white tape from someone and was astounded at how much I liked the feel of the white textured tape. I had always used plain medical white tape. The one I borrowed was bowling tape. What a HUGE difference it made for me. It acted like an on/off switch for allowing my thumb to exit cleanly. I've used white in the front of my thumb hole ever since.

White in the front, black in the back for me. This is the "feel" that I am used to now and I won't ever switch it. I always have my thumbholes drilled large to allow me to add tape to make the ball fit snugly, then I can just take it out if necessary. I only add or remove black tape because adding tape to the front will affect the span.

How can you choose to use tape or not to use tape?  The whole question indicates that you do not have any idea what a  proper thumb hole fit should be.

Thanks for the responses guys; I will give tape a try for better feel and release. Sunshine, I do understand proper thumbhole size and fit, its just personal preference on not using tape is all.

My point is nobody's thumb will stay the same thru a bowling session.  You can't not use tape.

I also use the white textured tape on the front until the thumb hole fits snugly. The black for me has been a waste.

My thumb mold has enough space for me to typically have between 3-5 pieces layered so I can pull out one at a time if/when needed.  Hopefully that is enough room for Baton Rouge in case the heat and humidity make my thumb swell.
