taping finger sprain

The other day I was practicing. Been trying to increase lift and follow through. Over did it a little and now have a sore ring finger joint. When tenderness is gone and I start bowling again I was thinking of using the middle finger as a splint and taping them together for a short time for a little support. Has anyone ever tried this ? (while bowling )

Not sure I quite follow how you asked that.  You have a sore ring finger and want to tape it together with the index finger?  If that is what you are asking, how do you get around the middle finger?

Decades ago (1970s?), I injured one of my bowling fingers - can't remember now if it was the middle finger or the ring finger.  I had the bright idea to try taping them together at the base.  Big mistake for me.  It put stress on the other finger and I ended up with two sore fingers.

You probably have tendonitis of one of the joints of the ring finger.
(At worst, you could have caused tendonitis in the tendons inside your wrist: carpal tunnel syndrome, which can potentially be very serious.)
Depending on how you "overdid it", that would determine what the best solution is.
If it was from too many games, then you need to wear some special support for the fingers, when you practice excessively.
That said, if it was from excessive lofting because you tried to put too much pressure on lifting the ball, then you need a coach to teach you how to do it right, because what you did is probably not good from the viewpoint of bowling and from the viewpoint of your personal health.

One device that I have found to help relieve physical stress on the finger joints is SteelFingers. Here is their web site: http://steelfingers.com/. It made a big difference when I had tendonitis in my ring finger. I no longer use it, but I always carry a pair in my bag.

The second "device" is rest. The only 2 things to cure tendonitis is an operation and never stressing the joint again.

+1 here.

After you heal remember that we don't want to "make" the ball do anything.  Instead, just to relax and "let" the ball hook and play what the lanes are giving you on that particular day.
 
Everyone has become so obsessed with trying to "create revs and hook" that they are losing any ability to repeat shots whatsoever.  Focus on correct body mechanics to avoid future injury and to score YOUR way. 

It doesn't matter whether you get to the break point by going left to right or straight up the boards.  Trust me, nearly everyone is using the same area (within 2-3 boards) for their break point.  It's the last 10-15 feet of lane that really matter.  The deeper you get (eventually) you start leaving more corner pins because the ball simply cannot transition that far and retain energy that long for the vast majority of bowlers.

MI 2 AZ you are correct, I meant the middle finger. Have also seen the buddy system used with the little finger. No Carpal tunnel. Think it was from trying to lift too much. I think the advice of trying to adjust what I already do as opposed to changing what I do is the way to go. At 64 years of age injuries take longer to recover from.

I find it better to use it by itself.
If you need a glove type apparatus, look further on that web site: there is a glove that includes the Steel Fingers.

But you  hurt your hand while wearing the Gizmo?
If so, it didn't prevent you from hurting your hand.

By the way, did you answer my question: did you hurt yourself bowling too much or by bowling incorrectly?

That's one of the major points I was trying to make with my questions.

SteelFingers does give true support to the finger joints. Believe it or not, unless you need major wrist support, that small device does help support the wrist and hand, in addition to the fingers. It's not obvious from its appearance, but when I used it, I previously used a Mongoose (not as major a support as the Gizmo, but still a wrist support). When I used the SteelFingers (not the SteelFingers glove), I hardly missed my wrist device at all.

Plus the basic SteelFingers is not a major financial investment ($21.95).

In any case, one of the most important things to do for healing is NOTHING. Advil or other anti-inflammatory will also help once you return.
