Currently Available Urethanes Questions
« on: December 23, 2011, 07:12:50 AM »
I know that there have been some posts already on the newer urethanes out on the market, but the info has been posted in multiple topics and without a working Search feature, it is hard to find, so please bear with me on this.

Of the newer currently available urethanes, are they all 'pure' urethanes or are some of them blended with reactive resin?  Which are which?

Which urethanes are solids and which are pearls?

Thanks, I just wanted to get all this info in one topic.

Just an FYI, but Brunswick's Avalanche Urethane is a polished pearl urethane

Avalanche Urethane is pearl. 100%  urethane with the pearl additive. From Brunswick's R&D director "the only thing different from this cover stock and our old ones is the newer casting machine in the newer facility."

Mine actually hooks about as much as my Slingshot, but responds slower to the friction, which is what urethanes do. It reads a the dry lane more predictably than the reactives. On dry lanes when everything wants to "jump" off the dry area, one of these can really be effective. Pin carry has been excellent for me. Hope this helps.

These are what I also experience with my Avalanche and Slingshot. I get good carry from the Avalanche because I can play further outside with it.

As far as the Desperado LE from Seismic, I beleive Ryan said is has just a tad bit of reactive material in it, not a pure urethane but not noticable reaction wise.

I'd add to this cover hardness or durometer scale will make a difference on how the said ball will react on the lanes.

VBP's Ogre Urethane is very hard 78-80 durometer and reaction and less total hook is very evident because of this.

Another factor to consider with these types of balls.

From what I understand, it was a quality issue. The material was added I beleive to help with core seperation in the original Desperados

Gary,

So, so far the only 100% urethane balls out there are
- Brunswick Avalanche pearl urethane
- AMF Hype Urethane (discontinued)
- Visionary Ogre Urethane.

All the other have some degree of plasticizer in them to make them urethane-resin blends.

Is this correct?

(This is not a bad thing. In fact for the most part, it is a good thing, making these balls more flexible
without losing too much of their urethane heritage in this "modern"age.)

Just to clarify on the Desperado LE..

It has about 20% of the resin that is in a typical mild reactive..  this was added to help give a little bit of skid, but not take away from the general urethane feel.

As I am sure most of you will know, a true 100% urethane ball will not really hold a shine, pearl or not.  We added the little bit of resin so that it was slightly easier to polish, but even with this, you still cannot get a glossy polished finished on the ball.

The Desperado LE has be designed for short tournament oil, not light conditions.  While many bowlers can use it on lighter conditions, it is not designed for this.  As stated above, urethanes are not weaker than resins, they just skid less and respond slower to friction.

If you want a urethane for light oil, go for one of the weaker cored pearl versions on the market, and if you want one for shorter tournament patterns go for a solid with a stronger core, such as the LE.

As others have already pointed out, the urethanes are not so violent once they get off the oil. They have a smoother more predictable arc. One downside to them is you don't get the extreme angles into the pocket that you can with the resins.
