Team Energy

What have you done if you have great team chemistry.  Then one night EVERYONE on the team is bowling 30-50 below their average per game except for one bowler who is bowling 20-30 over their average per game.

You lose the first game by a couple of pins.  2nd game by 30 or so.   Then 3rd game it's not even a contest as the team moral has dropped.   You are still bowling above your average and making the adjustments as your team just rolls over and die.

What do you do?    How do you energize your team?   (We also play a game of quarters.  If you get 3 strikes in a row everyone gives you a quarter and for every strike strung on to that one.   As well as if you are the only bowler with a strike in that frame).   So everyone is paying money almost per frame except for the one bowler bowling well.

What do you do to pick up your team and to "wake" them up if you will.

On my team, we just keep it really loose.  I find that if people get tighter as good fortune and good scores and good shots go by the wayside, then the results get even worse.

So, when any of us recognizes this, we go 180 the opposite way and get really loose and really loud without being obnoxious and disturbing the other teams around us.

For example, on beer frames, instead of collecting quarters/dimes or drinks, the person that got "baccala'ed" [birth of my screen name] gets a Ric Flair chop, complete with the Wwwwoooooo!!!!  If our first guy doesn't strike, then my team starts clapping and stomping the floor, waiting to Baccala the poor sucker.  Sometimes it's a baccala sneak attack with one of the light plastic flimsy drink trays from the snack bar.  A well-placed snack tray to the back of the shoulders is pretty loud and makes for great sight comedy, but doesn't hurt a lick.

So, somehow just lightening the mood and being idiots to each other helps us get through!!!

It doesn't hurt that we've been bowling with each other for about 8-9 years as well.

A team I used to be on would order a round of shots when things weren't going so well, and that would usually loosen us up a bit.

I take their quarters and run!

Unfortunately depending on how well you know them, trying to help them, will just annoy them further, and make them do worse.  I just let them have their bad day, and make it clear I don't care if they do sh*tty.  It seems as if you laugh it off, they put less pressure on themselves, relax and do better.

But for sure, I'd snatch up all the quarters I could get :-p

Like Adrenalin we do shots of Jack Daniels but we do it every night. We also meet at a bar an hour before bowling starts and have a few drinks sit and watch sports on the t.v. or if the weather is decent we sit on the patio and talk about sports and bowling. Loosens up the mood a bit and gets everybody relaxed and calm.

When we are bowling I try to keep everyone positive, We yell out lines from movies, like ''Give in to your Anger'' from Star Wars or ''DO SOMETHING'' from Space Balls. Try to get people to laugh and have a good time.
