Team lineup?
« on: January 02, 2006, 11:21:17 AM »
How do you guys set your team lineups?  Do you just go lowest first and highest be the anchor or do you do some other method.  On both my leagues I bowl anchor despite the fact I only have the 3rd highest average on the team.  The reason being my teammates seem to think I am the most "clutch" on the team.  If we need something done in the tenth I normally deliver.  I rarely choke like some of my teammates do. So our lineup sets up like this.

1. Best Bowler(he sets the table)
2. 4th highest
3. 5th
4. 2nd highest
5. 3rd highest(myself)

Leadoff, setup, and anchor. I like balanced teams anyway, but these are the positions I want to load up on. Pretty much all of my teams are setup this way.

Most consistent, best spare shooter bowlng leadoff. I also prefer someone who doesnt tend to complain about anything (this can spread through the team)

Worst bowler (average/inconsistency) bowling second. Sometimes there can be nothing wrong with this person, it just works out that thats where they fit in.

Potential spot (not as bad a 2 hole---more upside, less downside) is third. When these people shoot 550 it doesnt kill you, and when they shoot 700 they can carry the team. However they are never put in a pressure situation where they feel the burden.

Clutch bowler in the 4th spot---because if hes not clutch sometimes the anchor never has a chance.

Anchor bowler is either the highest average or as a tiebreaker the person least affected by late game pressure.

Another thing that goes into team lineups is trust. Most of the leagues I bowl in are Peterson points (head to head matches as well as team points). If I feel a teammate will win just as many individual points as I would in the anchor spot and maybe do better when the team needs strikes, I will defer to them and move myself higher in the lineup. It allows for intimidation of lower average bowlers which in turn gives your team an added advantage.

Sometimes having the high average at the bottom is a no-brainer. Sometimes there are people that just find ways to win no matter where they bowl. You need to know who these people are and be honest with yourself. Your team cant fail from there.

As a basic strategy, I'd put the best bowlers in the team as 1st and last player, the last man/woman being mentally "tough" enough to push pressure aside and just perform well when it counts in the final frames.

The rest is not clearly set, I think it also depends on personal preferences and the team against you are playing. I'd put the weakest players in 2nd or 3rd position. Sometimes, you might have player "couples" which can push each other, and then it is wise to integrate them in a row in the team (I have this case in my traveling league, and it works for them!).

But I would not let personal preferences rule above anything else. You really need a team captain who is accepted and knows something about game strategy and the players to have the final word about team setup and changes. Can help a lot in tough situations.

It used to be we put the top 2 bowlers in lead and anchor positions and the weakest in the #3 position.  The other two filled in the 2 & 4 positions.

In most leagues today it seems to be where each member is most comfortable.  I have been bowling lead off for the past 4-5 tears on most of my teams, so when given a choice that is where I bowl.  This season I am lead off in my sport league and my Sunday league.  I am the newcommer on Wednesday so I didn't say anything about my preference and was put in the #2 spot.

For tournaments where it is ladies only, my teams generally request I bowl anchor.  The 3 ladies I generally bowl with have a phobia about the anchor spot.  It doesn't matter to me.  I always say I can bowl garbage from any position  I do then add I can bowl well from any position, it just depends on how I match up to the condition out there.

I have the best strike percentage on the team so I bowl anchor to give us the best chance of sticking someone for a drink.  How's that for strategy?
