Team order Question
« on: July 20, 2008, 11:22:37 AM »
With the new season around the corner I had a question about the bowling order of a team. What order do you place the bowlers in.
Its a mixed league an the averages are:
#1 110
#2 155
#3 160
#4 190
#5 196

I would place bowler #1 third and bowler #3 first, what are everybody's thought's.

Thanks

highest on last position... second highest first.... mix up the middle as people get around... in best ascending towards the last one.

the first one starts the motor so the "middle" players keep it running and the last one starts the turbo to round it up.

I'd have to personally go:

160
110
155
190
196

160 in that league should be good enough to lead off. But keep the 190's together, so they can feed off each other. I like putting the weakest second.

Usual order is high average 5th, 2nd high average 1st, low average in the middle and the other 2 in 2nd and 4th positions.

Yep,

PBIII did an article once in Bowlers Digest on this, a long time ago (I think I still have it lol)

A lead off bowler is as important as a lead off batter! You get a better bowler to lead off and it set the tone for the other and it usually motivated the lower bowlers to perform better. The second bowler will be your second weakest bowler, the fourth bowler should be a very solid bowler who you could count on the mark every frame with consistency. The anchor should be the strongest and the one who can handle the pressure of throwing a lot of strikes when needed, or to give the best chance for striking out! Just my $.02 and the method that I have used with success, Bruce

Why put the 190 first. On that team the next 3 bowler are not going to be able to line up off him/her. On that team put the bowler where they are the most comfortable.

Averages mean little when setting up lineups.  I have setup a lot of competitive lineups and it all depends on the personalities of the bowlers.  Just because you average the most does not mean that you will be a great anchor bowler.  I have seen many high average bowlers that can not handle pressure.  Each team is different.  A lot depends also on the league that you bowl on.  Normally I will set the weakest bowler in the second position.

I think when setting up a lineup in bowling the team should have to consider the league, and where each bowler feels comfortable bowling in the lineup. After considering those two things, averages should become irrelevant.

For 45 years, I've had success with the following formula:
Put your best bowler 5th.
Put they guy who fills the most frames (a spare bowler in the old days) and pep guy 1st.
Put the lowest or most erratic 3rd.
The other 2 don't matter.
