Team USA Trials
« on: January 06, 2014, 11:22:38 AM »
Watching the stream on youtube, pretty interesting.  One thing that puzzles me is the amount of people that are there that have no business trying to make the team.  Maybe it's just because some people are ok with spending 1500 bucks to go have "the experience," but myself, no chance I'd go unless I thought I had a shot, which is why I'm sitting here watching.  Much rather spend the money and time on something else more "productive," or something I thought I'd get better value or returns out of.  At least they're out there putting their money up and trying to compete, there's a lot of local heroes that talk big games but won't do something like this, so kudos to the people that are out there . . but for several that I've seen, if they're not out there for the experience, I'm not sure what else it would be for.

every bowling tournament ever has about 10% of the people who will actually compete to win.  Everyone else is wasting their money.

You could say the same thing about the USBC Masters, US Open, USBC Nationals, or even local scratch tournaments.  If there were no "donators' there would be no tournaments out there.

I bowl a very successful scratch tournament with hoards of great players, on some days these guys just don't have it.  My philosophy to younger/inexperienced players is that you have to start learning somewhere.  If you have the means to participate give it a shot, you never know what will happen you may have the week/weekend/day of your life and do great.

On Day one, Kelly Kulick was the leader.  On day two, she looked like she didn't belong.  You never know.

Women are bowling next.  I agree that you have to have donators, but I'm not sure that Team Trials is where I'd go to give it a shot.  Even at a PBA tournament, I could see some people trying to at least cash, but I guess I just don't like the idea of people needlessly discouraging or confusing themselves.  It could be great experience if you have the right mindset and preparation going into it.

Anyone who thinks they are any good should go do this once.  Way harder than any PBA event I ever bowled.

It definitely appears to be.  The patterns for the Trials are nuts, your versatility is really put through the ringer.

I bowled one year before they had any name patterns, about 10 years ago.  I think it was a short, medium, and a long then, and then 32 games of match play for the top 32.  Dino Castillo led on the long pattern sliding on 2, lofting it over the right gutter.  The rest of us were sliding in the left gutter.  I guess we weren't too bright.

What I don't get is the prize fund.  1st is $1000 second is $500 third is $250..  There are over 100 people competing.  Last few years they had a block prize for each pattern, I believe they did away with that..  Where does all the money go and what is the point in bowling?  You are only bowling for 3 cashing spots and like 2 or 3 Team spots right?

It is a fund raiser for Team USA.  It and USBC fees pays for Team USA training and traveling to events all over the world.

I just wrapped up out there. I Finished 22nd out there so I can't complain. As far as talent out there, it was pretty good for the most part. There were a handful of guys that truly had no chance but I applaud them for trying. As far as payouts, They still paid 1st and 2nd to the daily squad leaders. 500 for first each day and 250 for second each day. The biggest thing bowlers were gunning for was the free health insurance(1 year worth) for 1st(Chris Barnes) and 2nd(Mike Fagan). I am glad they came out to prove they truly are the best. I hate that some of the pros can just fill out a resume and be on the team with out competing at Team Trials. Are they good?! Sure but go prove it to the kids out there. Well I have some things to work on bowling on the fresh. Maybe next year I will inch a little close to the top.

The people chosen for Team USA based on their resume have already proven to be the best, that is why they are chosen.

The selection process has always been political and once the Team was opened up to PBA members it has become more so, but they have eliminated the chance of not having the best team possible.

I agree with you. They are pros for a reason. Then again a lot of things look good on paper....
