Tell me about the ABT
« on: March 01, 2009, 07:24:39 AM »
I've been looking for some local tournaments and stumbled across the Amateur Bowlers Tour (ABT).  It looks like they have something every weekend, and an interesting Handicap format.  I'm in Chicagoland, are there any members here?  Just looking for some info, and some experiences.

What division would you be qualified for?

If you qualify for the Master's division, save your money. If you qualify for the Classic, check it out. Definitely not geared for the scratch bowler. Actually the owner/director like to push them out.

I bowled a few tournaments a while back.  The guy that runs it is a douche.  I left an 8 pin in the 10th, let out a loud sigh and he was "hey buddy, watch your temper".

I have bowled a few and they are not bad, unlike Rock's view which is his usual single minded arrogance a good portion of the bowlers who bowl them are plenty good to hang in a scratch tourney...I have. All tourneys are required to be a PBA or Sport Certified pattern. After two events you must become a member of the Tour, the will give patches that you are Required to where.

Pay outs are pretty good, they are good practice for those looking to become better on tougher conditions. Also the handicap system allows a larger range of bowlers to compete thus less linage and higher prize funds.

I did not mean to come across as arrogant, I am just saying that they should allow all bowlers (that are not nor have been pba members) to compete in the tournaments.  IMO, they do not want the ones that may be good enough to compete in the pba to come in and take some of their money.  I never said that there were no bowlers in the ABT that we not good.  Think of how many more bowlers you could possibly attract.

True Rock That Rule, the 225 average is old from the start of the ABT's I am not sure how closely it is really followed anyway the Milwaukee Branch has a few dudes, that have to be very close. We were actaully discussing that very rule the last tourney I bowled.

I also beleive that if they got more Hi average bowlers that rule would get tossed away all together. But alas can't have everything both ways.

Sorry for snappin at ya early in the morning, How did you finish in the Central tour?

Looks like some mixed opinions here.

I'm definitely not a scratch bowler, but it does look like I'd be in the Masters division.  Do you need to become a member in order to bowl in one of the tournaments, or is it like the PBA where you can shoe up a few times before becoming a member?

Do they use PBA shots, or just generic spot shots?

You need to become a member...the shots are NOT PBA.

I don't remember the exact number, I think you are allowed to bowl 2 tournaments before you have to be a member.

FYI.not all divisions put out walls in fact majority are played on flatter sport type conditions.  I've bowled Milw, Mpls and Orange Co. all were flat conditions in fact played harder than most PBAX leagues. Depends on the franchise holder/director.

The ones I have bowled have been a sport pattern they played difficult not super hard but plenty difficult enough to weed out the riff raff.

Nospareball if you average over deuce you will be fine.

Rock that sucks I had a ABT this year where I started out with a great look and just lost everything the more we bowled ugh frusterating
