Joining Obama's Army!
« on: August 11, 2009, 12:28:45 PM »
I'll be leaving my home in the metro detroit area October 21 for Ft Jackson in SC for basic then i'm off to Ft Rucker Alabama. I'm going in as an Air traffic Controller to those who care to know.

I'm want to know if there are any military guys/gals on here? I would like bowl while serving but I'm not sure what my schedule will be like once I'm done with my BCT and AIT. Military guys/gals care to chime in?

You will have the time to bowl during AIT for fun or recreation. After you get your duty assignment you can find out what shift you're on and probably get on a league-(If you don't get mobilized or work to many 12 hr shifts)

Lots of military men and women bowl in leagues.  The bases usually have pretty fair lanes that are kept up reasonably well, as profit isn't their primary motive.

Brian Voss honed his game while in the Army, and then went pro after he got out.

I haven't been to Ft. Rucker or Ft. Jackson but I was recently at Ft. Benning and Aberdeen Proving Grounds and both had on base alleys. Unfortunately being a civilian army employee makes it a bit tuff to justify using them (have to carry travel orders with me) but there was a fair number of people at both.

I actually may be going to Ft. Rucker in the coming months, so if you get assigned to participate in any testing for new weapons I should be there!

Best of luck and let us all know how it goes after basic. You get a connection to society at that point lol.

You'll have time, schedule pending. The posts I've been on the lanes were usually older, kept up but not like something you'd find in a booming center. The machines are usually older, things need to be redone but money is tight so it gets put off.

For the most part, except for overseas, they are just as good as the average center. Many places give, during certain times of the day, dollar games just to bring in folks. Many leagues, lots of nice folks, several real aZZes, just like on the civilian side of the street.

Some places the only lacking part is the pro shops. Some have good people some just have sales folks and as in the case where I am, no pro shop at all. Best part, since you'll have a weight limit for shipping things, that's a great excuse to buy new balls when you move.

Good Luck to ya. ATC is challenging and very stressful, slow down, keep your mind clear and you'll do just fine. In your job it's not so much what you do effects you but the ones you are controlling.

Ft. Jackson does have a bowling center. From memory, I'd say it's about 24 lanes...

Well when I was in the Army, mind you this was back in the 1980's. Basic you can forget about it. Your AIT well that depends on your school and how long your school will be. Some schools are pretty strict and some are pretty lacked.
Now your permanent duty station is a different story, some are almost just like a job with you work your hours then your off, but some take alot of your time and a lot of field work. But you will have time to bowl and depending on your job and shift, you should be able to join a league and the leagues on base are more flexible because it is mostly military people and their dependents, and they under stand that your military duty comes first.

  And also THANKS for serving.
