Seriously, I am begining to believe the theory that older balls from the early-mid 1990's like the rhinos, original zones and hammers hit like a tank and carry and these new hybrid covers are crap. This teal 1993 rhino straight up murdered the pins tonight and none of my new stuff came close. it cost me a 1.99 and 26 bucks to plug and drill.

Because the weaker cover and milder cores store energy longer and also let you mover right where carry percentage is better

I have a Blue Warlock from 1997 and it's Orange brother from 2001 who perform much better than any new ball I've purchase to this day.

I get where you're going with this I find myself fancying older equipment as well.

i agree with crd i hate skid flip. i prefer to throw older stuff. my orange warlock is a great ball too. the only new ball that was poured this year is my clutch. splitcity you got a good deal on the ball.

Same here - shot a Revolution Renegade NIB on ebay (a Brunswick overseas ball from 2000, probably PK18 solid with a mild, med RG core). Did not expect much, but the ball has proven to be a killer on medium to medium-dry conditions, esp. in tournaments. Great control, and I generally seem to fare better with older equipment that reads the lane a bit earlier and more consistently than more modern, porous coverstocks that "grab and go" as soon as they touch a dry part of the lane. Even my Blue Hammer works well when applied apporpriately.

Never underestimate "old" stuff.

Because you have one of the best balls ever in your hands. For that time by far the strongest ball, until the X-calibur came.

If your Rhino Teal is working, then you don't bowl on conditions that are meant for strong balls.

I still use it now and then and I get pinaction with it that is not seen in the new material. When I hit the pocket light it's like the pins are in a mixer.

90% of my stuff is old, and i love it!!! All these guys with 170-180 averages are goin to the shop every couple of months and i'm goin 220-225 av to whack them with some weird old stuff.

The better you bowl the less you need modern big hookers or skid flippers. I've been getting better and better over the last few months and I'm finding that I have much more success with balls that were designed to have "tamer" reactions.

I have done the same thing for years. I still have in my bag: 3-D Pearl Hammer from 1997, the Columbia Rock On that I use for oilier conditions and goes out to the USBC Tournament with me, and a Green Gargoyle that I got back in 2001 that I use and also goes to the USBCs with me. I have shot over 700 the last 4 years in the Singles Event, 3 times with the Green Gargoyle and once with the Rock On. The other ball in my bag is a Rattler with a tame layout. I am averaging 240 after the first 4 weeks so far this season and averaged 236 last year with the same equipment.

If you show up in a town where the center strips by hand and is using a Century 100 to oil, the odds are they are in a time warp and you should be too with your equipment.

The lane surface itself also makes a difference. If you're bowling on ancient wood, first generation synthetics, or Guardian, the lanes are naturally going to hook early and a lot. Older, less responsive equipment is going to conserve energy better and be more predictable in those cases as well. However, try throwing an old Teal Rhino on new Brunswick Anvilane on a long, higher volume shot and watch the 5-7 splits add up!

Funny I watched a guy all last year absolutely destroying the pins with his old purple Hammer. When he finally decided to upgrade he didn't go for anything big. He went for a Hammer Razyr, which has a weak pancake core! I think it goes to show that with guys using the biggest balls out there on league night right next to new league bowlers throwing plastic, there is something to be said for a tame ball that will not over-react when it gets to the breakpoint. I am starting to really appreciate the Rico drill for this.

I gotta add and since 90% (wild guess) are bowling on a THS why not use a smaller differential say weaker cover with a larger core and play more to your comfort zone? High performance balls chew up the head oil faster with their high flaring performance.

I started my fall league on Friday on 1-2 which hook the most in the house. Plus it seem they still have the summer condition out. I tried my Seek & Destroy and my AMF Orbit and didn't like the reaction. Took out my Ebo Zebra IV spare ball and shoot 4 highest series in the house with a 670. Old can be good.

in the summer time im in the exact opposite position. I needed either something with a strong cover or something with a core that gets the ball to face up.

the problem in the winter time/fall league on fridays is everyone throws a polished high performance ball like a virtual gravity or jigsaw and the condition at best is medium-light. it screws everyone as they all shoot 500 series and as soon as i move into their track the lanes are over reacting. even my ogre ss is too strong by game 2!

the point is you have to bring equipment that works to the lane conditions you face. new bowling balls are designed to face the thicker oils being used every year. but not every house ends up using those thicker oils.
