New Ball...What do you think?
« on: January 07, 2004, 12:19:07 AM »
Figured that I would see what everyone here thought about a new ball for me.

Basically I'm looking for a ball to go in the later parts of the tournament when by Lightning Flash (pin / cg in grip line with the pin above fingers) is hooking too much.  I'm getting better with my deep inside game but am only comfortable playing as deep as between 5th and 6th in most houses due to having to walk around the ball returns.  I've started to practice a thumb down delivery too...but am not comfortable with it yet.

(EDIT)...Here are two of the balls that I've tried:

Currently I have a Big Hit Pearl drilled with the cg in the middle of my grip and the pin above and to the left of my middle finger.  This ball definitely gets great length, but the turn is a bit touchy for me.  I've tried two different drillings and it was either not enough hook or too much.

I also have a V2Dry drilled with the pin 4-1/2" from my PAP / above finger line, CG 2-1/2" right of my grip line...weight hole on my VAL/Centerline.  Originally I thought this ball would be the answer too, but I find it reads the midlane a little too much and doesn't have enough backend to play inside.  I can square up with the ball but I find it way to sensitive to the conditions that I see.

Basically I'm at a crossroad and really don't know what to try.  I know that equipment can only do so much but there has to be something else that will at least give me a better look than what I have currently.  I've been thinking of either the Barbed Wire or the Sonic X Pearl.  I'm leaning toward the SX drilled with the pin in my track as suggested by a fellow driller that I know.  I’m just worried about he differences between the LF’s Curelyon pearl coverstock and the SX’s Sure Gripâ„¢ Reactive Pearl coverstock.

Well that's my dilemma...now what is your $0.02 into what I should do?

wow i dont know if i would put the pin in the track of the Sonic x. its a  weak ball to start with and i dont see how it would do anything at all with the pin in the track.

also why so many pearls or dry lane balls? im havin the opposite problem and im lookin for a solid or light load particle to smooth out the reaction when my pearls are screamin in the back. just my $.02

I just drilled a Sonic X pearl, man this is a strong ball.Covers more boards than anything else I've got(WOW,Boost,Threat).Huge snap on the backend too.I think the Sonic X solid would have been a better choice.

Goof - You're not alone!  I'm trying to fill a very similar hole in my arsenal.  I need something between my Big Hit Solid and my V2 Dry.  The "step down" between the two is just too large. (It sounds like you would need to wait a bit longer to use the V2 Dry the way you want to - inside).

The Barbed Wire has the same coverstock as the Big Hit Pearl and we're told that coverstock is 70-80% of your ball reaction.  So if our Big Hits aren't doing the job, likely the Barbed Wire won't either.

I've been considering the following balls to fill the gap:
Sonic X Solid (Weak Drill)
Visionary Slate Blue Gargoyle (Average Drill)
Columbia 300 Jekyll (Long pin and Weak Drill)
Track Dry Heat (Weak Drill)
Storm Too Hot (Weak Drill)
Dyno-Thane Crisis (Average Drill)
Lane1 XXL (Average Drill)

Let me know how it goes and I'll let you know if I find anything.

Another I'd consider would be the Green Gargoyle.  Won't do anything in the oil, but provides a good pop once it finds the dry.  You might have to lightly remove some of the factory polish (gray Scotch Brite) to reduce some over/under.

If you want to play more direct, look at the Slate Blue Gargoyle, XXL, or the plastic XXXL.

take a pearl reactive(2000 polished), place the Pin above the bridge and swing the cg to the negative at 135 deg. this will give you a hook set reaction.

for referrence I have done this to Blade pearl reactive. you will need to keep the speed adadquate becuse if you throw to slow it will really roll out and not carry. but with the right speed I have been able to play the dry lanes like they were walled. Going 8 weeks on a summer league and never went broklyn. That was the first time I ever experiance that.
