Rosin Use Rules Violation?
« on: April 19, 2012, 12:03:57 PM »
We  have a guy that poors rosin on the bar like sitting area located right behind the bowlers sitting area. One of  his opponents argued that this was a rules violation because some bowlers sit in this area and may accidentally get into the powder.  Almost started a fight as the two teams tied during the second half and were bowling a tiebreaker.

I thought it was wrong to raise the issue at the end of the season when the guy has done this all year. I have also bowled in other leagues where bowlers have done this, scraping the rosin off of a stick. Never saw it as an issue. Is it a rules violation?

Those that can do. Those that can't complain. Pimpin ain't easy, but it's mandatory.

My understanding would be that this would NOT be a rules violation due to it not being on the approaches OR on the ball surface (not wiped off).  I could be wrong though.  E-mail the USBC rules counselors....

As was already suggested, a quick call to USBC rules will let you know for sure. However, as the previous poster said, I'm doubting this would be a violation for two reasons. First, it wasn't in "the bowler's area." Second, I don't see how what he was doing can be construed as altering the playing surface for other competitors, which is the provision that keeps guys from putting Easy Slide on the bottom of their shoes. Now, certain leagues and tournaments require bowlers to "keep all powders self-contained." If your league has a rule on that, he could be taken to task. If not, I don't think there's much anyone can say/do about it.

Another year, another arsenal of bowling balls, and I'm still a standard house hack!

AFAIK and from local practice, this is not any violation at all - but I'd suggest asking the respective player for care and maybe, if that does not help, informing a referee or some official. It's like jugging drinks in the settee area - it is not forbidden, but it's like playing with disaster, esp. when the lanes are crowded.

However, concerning rosin I witnessed a discussion druing league play that a player got a referee warning because the player would pat the rosin bag onto the finger holes upon each shot, releasing a cloud of dust. He was not called for the potential hazards for others, rather for potentially "altering the ball surface during competition", because half of the ball was literally covered with the stuff. I doubt if this makes sense or has a reaction effect, but thereafter the player had to wipe the ball before each shot to make sure the surface is clean... maybe that's a back door strategy? ;)

USBC does not allow the patting of rosin on the finger and thumb holes during the national tournament.  The reason is that the powder cannot be completely wiped off.  Some does stay in the pores, altering the surface.  Not illegal in most leagues, just potentially dangerous for anyone that happens to step in it.
