Terrifying PBA exp night
« on: May 07, 2008, 01:11:19 AM »
We had our first night of PBA Experience leagues last night and it was terrifying This is my Third or fourth  season bowling on them so I am pretty experienced and one house puts two different ones down every day in summer for us to practice.

Viper last night started playing 14 to 8 had a good look but wasn't carrying very well fought and scratched to 176, changed balls with the break down and went left accordingly still couldn't get anything to happen opened in the ninth and tenth for about 160 terrible. Moved pairs and started really experimenting with different lines and shots rev rates and axis tilts and found nothing.

Disappointed with my bowling not mad Disappointed I feel i could have bowled so much better the line was right their just had no luck. Sorry for the rant just had to vent

I understand. We start our league next week, but got to practice last night on our two patterns. [shark, scopion] I just didn't have any luck. I tried everything and guess I would have averaged 180 maybe if a real score was being used. I think I will adjust surface on my Awsome Revs and try that next week when we start. Could be a long summer, but I don't care bowling in this league last year helped me raise my average 10 pins this year.

From what you have posted I think you started out too far left in the pattern and continued to move left.  My suggestion for Viper is to get right and lower your tilt and axis rotation.

Wait until you average 136 for 9 games on Cheetah. You'll feel awesome about yourself.

Mainzer,
Is this the one at sabre?
If it is.
You've got to remember with it being a doubles league there isn't a whole lot of traffic in front of you.
You might of moved Right a touch because of the other guys creating some carrydown and found some fresker backends.
And a little tug room because of the carrydown.

If it doesn't come from Team Utah.
Just leave it in the car or at home.

I *hate* the Cheetah pattern. I averaged no worse than 170 on any of the other named patterns the last time I bowled PBAX. But Cheetah kicked my butt.

For starters, there was no "free hook near the gutter," which could be a function of the people/equipment that laid down the pattern for us. My best look came by going straight up 10 the way Mike Mineman did when he won his title two years ago.

Unfortunately, I never had that great of a look regardless, and I was stubborn about moving in because I was determined to play the pattern the way it was "supposed" to be played.

We were "supposed" to bowl the Scorpion last night. I
hit a 245-190-222 and said,"man this is too easy". The owner
came out at the end and he said he forgot to oil them the
pba way. It was a ths all night. For a few minutes I thought
I was a pretty good bowler. I'll let you know next week when
we get the real pattern.

Well the Cheetah was tweaked this year to get rid of the bumper bowling idea. Plus the Cheetah obviously plays different at every house. I bowled on a Viper pattern in Farmingdale recently, and it played much tighter than I expected it too.

On another note with the PBAX leagues... a dilemma may be in the offing come fall for the scratch league I run up here in Appleton.  We had a few guys talk about it the past few weeks etc, etc, etc.  At our banquet last week I did a blind survey polling the membership on it.  I asked a first question of "If the league where to vote on going to a PBA experience format next year would you vote yes or no?"  And a second question of "If the majority voted yes would you still bowl in the league?"  I had 51 of the 56 regulars at the banquet.
42 voted and one team was leaving so they didn't vote (5 man roster, 5 votes)
Another team wasn't sure until my vim and vigor ;o) speech so they didn't vote either (4 more) so everyone was accounted for.  I had 30 guys say yes and 12 say no to number 1 and I had 32 guys say yes and 10 no to number 2.  I knew for sure who a few of the no votes where and asked them their thoughts.  A few of them said they would still probably bowl (the $15,000 prize fund isn't going anywhere)  The ones that had issues where the ones if it was the only league they bowled in.  They still wanted an easier night.  As for the team that was on the bubble about coming back they are staying put and said whatever the majority went with they where good to go.
The dilemma will be going yes and having guys leave and more holes to fill.  To the other side the proshop man says he already has a list at least 6 names long of guys not in the league currently that have said count them in if it happens.  A little bit of double edged sword here.  Chasing guys away that have been in the league from day 1 but maybe bettering ourselves in tougher conditions like Nationals etc by throwing on them more.

I'm with Jess on this one.  I've never gotten a really good look on the Cheetah.  I've averaged 180+ on all other patterns, and the Cheetah just owns my soul.  I did better on the US Open than teh Cheetah

My PBA Experience league starts tomorrow night.  After my glorified-practice-sesssion unsanctioned league last night, I practiced for two games on the Cheetah we'll be on the first week of the PBA league.  The pattern was blown up from a lot of traffic -- carrydown was pretty bad.  There was NO free hook off the gutter like I experienced other times I was on the Cheetah.  Very different experience!  If I hit the 2 or 3 board at the breakpoint, it would sail on straight and leave a washout.  If I hit 4, it was money.  If I hit 5, it was going through the face.  (My buddy was trying to play in, but couldn't find a look there either, so I stayed outside)  Throwing anything pearl was out of the question since the carrydown was making it skid for ages.  I still managed to shoot 199 the first game and 186 with an open in the 10th the 2nd game.  We'll see how that compares to the fresh pattern I'll see tomorrow night.

Things I've averaged higher on than Cheetah:

* U.S. Open
* TOC
* Nationals
* Bug-sprayer-oiled shot in Monroeville, Ala., on wood lanes with above-ground returns and enough moisture sweating on the lanes to wash a 1959 Ford Fairlane
* Reverse block
* The night in Florence, Ala., when the wick-style oil machine broke down and dumped roughly 20x the amount of oil on the lane that it should have, and we were all throwing off the corner and just praying not to leave 8-10s.
