What are you thoughts on TO bowling the USBC OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP Wednesday 10 pm ET....
Will this be the normal hard shot or something else...
Do you think this is good for bowling?
This caught my interest....
-
Why not? He's definitely got no football to worry about!
-
Why would it not be the normal shot?
-
The avg person will not score that well on that shot and this is about rating....
-
So you're saying the ratings are more important to the USBC than the legacy of the entire Open Championship?
The avg person will not score that well on that shot and this is about rating....
-
Well - Since we know he didnt have to qualify.. :o
-
Qualify for what? It's an OPEN tournament, anyone who is a USBC member can bowl.
Well - Since we know he didnt have to qualify.. :o
-
So - Why is he on TV - Will everybody be on TV
-
Because he's TO.
-
Well - Since we know he didnt have to qualify.. :o
Are you confusing the USBC Open Tournament (read: National tournament) with the US Open (PBA tournament)? Only thing I could think of. He is bringing his team there, comprising of Tom Clark and Mike Jakubowski. He also is going to bowl alongside McNeil for minors.
For the Nationals patterns, he's going to get the same pattern laid down that we all get.
So - Why is he on TV - Will everybody be on TV
Everyone on his pair will. Besides, bowling with the commissioner of the PBA would be worthy enough alone.

You might be right...
It says Dont Miss It! Former NFL Star Terrell Owens will the USBC Open Championships on Wed @ 10 pm ET and we will have LIVE covedfage on BowlTV!
And thats not all! Its the first part of a doubleheader as defending all events and doubles champion Matt McNiel takes to the lanes immediately following!
Help us spread teh word and be sure to tune in for the entering night of bowling,,,,
Then it shows his picture with Gold IQ I beleive..
Still sounds like marketing

USBC is a business. If you didn't know that already, you do now.

It is marketing, but it's not like the show is on ABC or NBC or anything, it's a live webcast, how many people actually watch it other than us bowlers?
-
If you want TO to show up, just tell him there will be a camera.
-
If he throws the ball straight then the tournament condition or any other condition will not matter. Watching anyone shoot 120s no matter the venue is not entertainment.

Huh? Who said TO throws the ball straight. The guy has some game. He's been working with Mark Baker and he's probably a better bowler than most of us bowling nut jobs, lol.
-
I don't keep up with celebrity bowlers. Just a general statment. Id be more inclined to watch Jerome Bettis.
-
T.O is actually not bad. He hooks the ball and throws it with 2 fingers so this shot will be extremely tough for him unless his cover/layout combo is right. Im sure Mark baker and everyone coaching him have him stuff drilled for this kinda thing. I know ill be tuning in to see how it turns out but odds are it wont be pretty for 81 tomorrow..
-
No such thing as bad press when it comes to promoting the sport. I wonder if he'll get in any brackets?
-
It would be much better for the USBC for Owens to have a bad set than a good set . . but the idea that they would put a special shot down for him, in a tournament where thousands of dollars are on the line is one of the most ridiculous conspiracy theories I've ever heard. Sorry, but that's the truth.
-
I say he might reach 210 since its on TV... Sorry -- That is the most I can give him
-
Not sure he's the best to promote the sport... Sort of like Rodman visit N. Korea....
However if they want to do it on their own, and not self-promote, more power to them.... And best of luck!
-
TO actually had a pretty good showing during the PBA League and also during the Chris Paul celebrity tournament earlier this year. He looked better than the other celebrities and can definitely hook it. I'm thinking he could surprise everyone and may do fairly well.

Agreed. TO has a hell of a lot better balance and form compared to some of the other celebrity bowlers; hell, better balance and form than a lot of those going to the USBC tournament altogether!
But let's not let his celebrity status be the tale of the tape. TO is in the tournament, which means that he had to have bowled in league over the past two years to qualify. His stats should be searchable at bowl.com, so you should find out all you need to know about his game there.
I suspect he'll do average for the tournament (average being relative to his game).

It should be available on bowl.com, but doesn't appear to be.

Not to hijack or derail the topic but ex NFL Washington Redskins player Fred Smoot has an awesome physical game and a legit 215-220 avg. T.O. is the ultimate competitor and really seems to enjoy the game. He has a lot of transferable talents, such as natural timing, and with the right coaching I think he can be quite a player.
He will be a great ambassador to our sport and I think we as bowlers should really drop the attitudes and be more welcoming to any outside influence. This is a man who is legitamately trying to get better, enjoys, and most of all RESPECTS the game. Go T.O.
P.S. he does use his thumb, with an extreme wrist cup. His span is in the 5 7/8 range.

Form looks solid. Still a little stiff, but for a newer bowler I'd say very good no doubt.
-
After 3 opens in the game I'm watching now, TO switched to an Enigma after starting with the Oath. Since then, he is still having a rough go. He just isn't picking up his spares.
But, his form actually looks pretty good.
-
I didn't see how he finished the 3rd game...clearly spares are a mystery to him, but that strike ball is strong..was impressed with the 4 bagger in the first game. I've been dismissive of T.O in football, just wish he would play football and not talk so much..gained alot of respect for him tonight. His first game would be what I would optimistically expect should I ever get to bowl nationals. And Tom Clark has pretty good form too..wow..
-
I think his last game was a 168. He went back to the Oath and threw it better for the most part. Problem was he still couldn't make simple spares or the 2 baby splits later in the game. Overall, he shot in the 430's.
Tom Clark was pretty impressive. He was using a Sync and throwing it over the 6th arrow in the 3rd game.

Was I the only person who heard a person shot 299 and they didnt even put the camera on the man -- That is very tragic... Any professional that isnt playing his sport is just ordinary joe to me...

What do you expect? Them to pick up their entire equipment and move it down to a given pair because someone is bowing a good game? and when that guy gets the pressure from it, throws his entire game off?
Besides, the cameras and equipment they have set up are stationary. It would take a good 30 - 45 minutes just to disassemble it before even moving it.
You are seriously asking too much of people just for your entertainment.

That 299 must have been on the "easy shot" you thought TO was gonna be on!
-
He ended up with 1508 for all events. Best set was 530 in singles...
He wasn't even the lowest man on that team either, FWIW.

They'll have video of it after the fact . . like they do for every other honor score. They film the 10th frame of a lot of them. I had the front 9 in Reno in 2011, and they had a camera out and a few reps standing back there by the time I got up in the 10th. They were in no way intrusive or distracting though.
-
Heres a world class athlete that has some celebrity status that loves bowling and is trying to help promote the game. Two thumbs up to Terrell Owens and I hope he continues to help promote the game. This is a good thing for bowling any way you look at it.
-
Whoopee! Another side show by the USBC! Just what serious bowlers want to see. I'd rather watch a game of darts by Mike Tyson. How Low can you go??
-
how low can you go really? i mean T.O likes bowling so he bowled the open championships i mean omg so much publicity right a whopping 300-500 people on bowltv saw him. i mean get real people he likes bowling so he bowled must everyone be so immature about everything that doesnt concern them
-
If you like to watch "washed -up" "stars" hi-jack another sport, so be it. I prefer watching real stars perform in their chosen sport that they have worked tirelessly to be their best in.
-
such an idiotic comment. so an athlete cant participate in multiple sports or take up another activity? hes getting into bowling. hijack another bowling? seriously? a total of 300 people know about it thats it come on KID let it go be serious
-
Wow.. I would like to add that new people coming into the sport is a good thing, regardless. I disliked T.O. the football player-flat out diva. He is taking the sport (not the game) seriously, working with high level coaches, being involved with the PBA outside the Chris Paul charity tourny. He has a convert in me. No need to treat T.O.'s involvement as tho it's an alien invasion.
-
I agree with iowa lefty several years ago I was a team-mate in an match point league with John Burkett when he pitched for the Texas Rangers he was pretty good and so was couple of his teammates.
-
Whether it's T.O. or anyone else, bringing attention to the sport of bowling is nothing but a good thing. The likes and dislikes of a person have nothing to do with what we need in the game, what we do need is the attention that person brings to it.
-
So don't watch.
Do you consider some of our own, if they're on the downside, washed up?

WHOOPEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I CAN HARDLY WAIT!!!!!!!!!
-
Any attention that can be generated by a person for bowling is nothing but good.
It might or should bring media attention and with that maybe some sponsor attention. Which the bowling world is looking for and we all benefit from that.
-
This will get attention. Good chance it will be on Sportscenter and other sports talk shows, and then it will be forgotten within a week. These kind of stunts don't do anything for bowling in long run.
-
I don't see the problem. He's a decent house-shot hack, and bowling on sport will give him perspective. This is attract attention to the PBA and perhaps gain viewers/participators. I don't think this an insult to amateurs around the country.
-
This is a old topic it already happened back in the beginning of May
-
He is actually going to participate in the WSOB PBA events in October according to the PBA Facebook page yesterday. Should be interesting.
