How to train yourself to look at arrows/breakpoint?
« on: October 31, 2012, 09:30:36 PM »
Ive been working on a lot of aspects of my game, but one discouraging habit ive developed is not looking at a mark when i throw. i look at the same spot everytime, but its not on the lane, its on the approach-like wes malott; only no where near as consistent. I am fairly accurate at hitting the same spot, within a couple boards. To play inside/outside lines i just turn my feet at an angle if i want to swing it out, and if i want to play inside i straighten my feet out.
I just want to take my game to the next level, its not that hard to average 200 on a house shot if you dont have a mark, theres a good 5 board margin... Problem is whenever i practice it hitting the arrows i feel off balance (two handed with a skip step). And on my backswing i look down, after release i look up to see the arrows/breakpoint. Its extremely difficult to break this habit and keep my head still throughout my backswing. Any advice how to break myself of this?

I suspect that Wes Mallot is within 1/2 board each time he releases the ball. This is necessary if you look at the foul line.  Missing one board at the foul line is like 3-4 boards at the arrows and 5-7 boards at the pins.  Accuracy is one of the drawbacks of the two handed style.  I am not saying to change your style, but you will have to change your target.  Bowling several games focusing on the arrows is about the only way I know of.   For practice, narrow your focus to say the 17th board at the arrows.  Don't worry about scores.  Just hit that board with every shot.  Watch your ball go over that spot.  Manually keep score of how may times you hit ths 17.  Give yoursel 10 points for your ball rolling over the 17.  5 points if you hit the 18 or the 16.  1 point if you hit the 19 or the 15.  zero if you don't hit them.  Narrowing your focus will help you change your target.

WOW....

You know until this summer I never played the back arrows of a lane before the PBA experience and I am still learning... I can see the target, aim at the target but somehow the result isnt what was desired...... Depending on the shot and giving that you are two handed roller revs arent the problem with your shot but sometimes it hurts... Practice the shot with less revs and concentrate on entry to breaking point.. You will have to keep your head up though..

Good luck...

zanatos, i worked on it today and was able to steady my head and atleast look at the arrows. the accuracy isn't there as i am just trying to look at the arrows. i generally dont change my revs, just my axis rotation if i need a little more oomph

It's largely repetition,so keep practicing and if your accuracy doesn't improve you should seek out a qualified coach to identify any deficiencies in your game that may hinder your ability to repeat shots. Good luck!

A drill that i used to run was to put a piece of tape over my targets. Each game I would practice a game aiming at each target. This is how as a lefty, I learned to move my feet and play different areas of the lane. It helps to keep your eyes focussed downward at the target. Be sure to watch the ball roll over the target. I use to tell people not to take your eyes off the target until the ball hits the pins.

Think about it. Your delivery consisted of keeping your head down the entire time. Now you are trying to to keep it up. You are changing something. Its going to feel awkward, its going to throw you off. Changes like this can take a while. Its not just the physical but there is also mental aspect of it.

Change is hard, you have to practice, and practice more. You want to get to the point that it feels natural to keep your head up.

I use to tell people not to take your eyes off the target until the ball hits the pins.

Good suggestion, however, I think that you if take it one step further and see what was the last pin your ball hit before going off the deck.
