Lowering backswing
« on: May 17, 2013, 07:59:26 AM »
Been my achilles heel lately with it getting too steep. Any tips on lowering it without screwing up timing?

Start with the ball in a lower starting position, i.e. if you hold the ball at chest level to start now, start with it at waist level or below.  This can help reduce your backswing since the ball will have momentum in the drop.

What problems are you experiencing as a result of a high backswing?

Agree with cornerpin; also, shorten your approach by a few inches.

The problem occurs when my backswing gets too high. If I can keep it consistent its fine. Just trying to minimize the problem with a lower swing.

Muscle and early timing creates inconsistencies in an arm swing....allowing the ball to swing from the shoulder helps minimize pulling the ball up

Muscle and early timing? When have you watched me bowl, Rico? To the OP, just an FYI that this can be tough to fix if muscle and early timing are what's causing it. I've been working to lower my backswing for 5 years, and I just can't seem to fully work it out. As others have said, try to just let the weight of the ball move it through the phases of the swing. If you can do that, simple starting position adjustments may do the trick.

Consciencely make sure that the ball is swinging your arm instead of your arm swinging the ball.  It will take muscling the ball completely out of play and promote a lower and freer swing.

In line with what TWOHAND stated, imagine handing the ball to someone in front of you. You simply let gravity take over and let your arm swing without muscle  tightening (I would have used the term "push-off," but I understand from Charlest that "push-off" is a Dangerous word on this forum!!!)

If you muscle the ball back, timing becomes early thus pulling the ball down giving the feeling of later timing...trying to catch up to the ball.

One thing that greatly helps reduce muscling the ball is to have your non-bowling hand support the weight of the ball. If your bowling hand/arm is supporting the ball's weight at the beginning you're already muscling the ball before you take one step.

If done properly, like others have said you'll be swinging the ball from your shoulder(pivot point) and the ball(gravity) will naturally swing your arm, instead of you swinging the ball.

I agree with Cornerpin.  Holding the ball at a lower starting position will help as there won't be as much momentum compared to starting higher.  Shortening the approach slightly can also help as you won't have as much foot speed to build up before you reach the line.  These 2 things have helped me lower my backswing a bit this past year.  It's still a higher swing, but now just above shoulder height instead of going sky high.
