Bowling thumb sock
« on: June 15, 2014, 03:13:24 PM »
Anyone here use a thumb sock of any type? I just picture ppl squeezing more with the sock on unless the thumb fit is tight or forward. How does it work and feel?

Also, one add says if you have a release problem, the sock will help. What problems would justify the use a sock? Wouldn't a good fit fix a release problem?

I'm not putting these products down. I'm just curious, that's all...

(I use and love the Magic carpet and white 1" tape)

I used one for a while same concept as the vise hada tape for me. Just a cheaper version for me as it was 7.50 for 2 socks and they lasted longer. I definitely had to cake it in rosin because at first I just fell out of the ball

There is a senior bowler that I know that has severe arthritis in his arms/hands.  In fact, his left arm is almost unuseable so when he bowls he has to do everything with his right hand only - picks the ball up with only his right hand and has to balance it in his setup.  Having to hold the entire weight with only his right hand/arm probably causes squeezing.

His right thumb joints are severely swollen.  He used to put bowling tape on his thumb to eliminate friction/pain/swelling so I suggested he try a bowling thumb sock.  He likes that product as he does not have to try to put tape on his thumb which was not easy and he said that it relieves some of the friction on his thumb joint so it does not swell up as much after bowling.

I use both a thumb sock and a thumb protector.  I use the sock underneath the protector, odd I know, but it works very well.  I use them together, because together they act like a regular sock and shoe.  Wear a shoe without a sock, and you will likely get a blister.

The thumb sock is very, very slick.  I don't think I would ever use one on its own.

The thumb protector does a pretty good job doing what it says, but still rubs the skin a little as the ball comes off.  I would recommend this to use by itself, as it really does give your thumb some protection.  The one drawback, is that if your thumb hole is already tight, you probably won't be able to get into your ball with this on.

Would the same go with Brunswick's glove with the thumb protecter? I'd imagine it'd either be really slick or have something on it to make it grip.

The Thumb Protector has leather at the end of the thumb.  It's a little slick, but the thumb sock is much, much slicker.  And if you are considering a Protector, I wouldn't go with the Brunswick one.  It is "one size fits most", but runs really small.  I have some small hands, and the Brunswick one just barely fits.  The generic bowlingball.com branded protector is much larger, and fits me much better.

I have been using one, but I developed a dropping problem with it so now I'm back to tape and ultra slide.

For me, my thumbhole had to be really really tight to get a consistant release. Anything less and you were either having to grip the ball, or you were throwing the ball in your teamates laps behind you.

It has a seam that runs down the righthand side of the sock that digs into your knuckle, and it gets annoying when you bowl long tournaments with it.

I have used both tape and the sock. There are two or three different socks. Red bak  and blue if I remember correctly and they each have different smoothness.

The socks work fine. I liked the red one the most as it was the roughest. The sock fits very tight on your thumb and will wear over time and may tend to slide some.

I have gone back to vise nt 50 yellow tape. It works best for me.
