Good ball for Floods?
« on: February 29, 2004, 06:12:11 PM »
Hey everyone,

I have plenty of balls, and, as best as I can tell, my arsenal is fairly complete with the exception of a soup ball for tournaments. My Black Cherry Bomb is exceptional on heavy, but in a true flood even it doesn't want to move very much. Therefore, I'm thinking that I'm probably talking about a particle ball here, something that grabs early and will arc, arc, arc all the way down in soup. I'm not looking for anything that will hook the lane in soup, because we all know that there is no such ball. I'm talking about something that gets rolling nice and early and gives a continuous read in the heaviest of juice. Here are a few of the balls that I have thought about:

Super Carbide Bomb
Midnight Scorcher
Big Blue Hammer
Diesel Particle
Killer Instinct Sanded (I know it's reactive)
Apex Addiction or Obsession
Super Freak
Phenom

Those are just a few of the ideas that I have, so feel free to let me know your experiences with them or to give suggestions on others. Any help that you can give is greatly appreciated.

I have said it before the midnight scorcher gets it done. It will roll/arc when every thing else is still skidding looking for dry. This ball doesn't need friction it creates it.

If you have something old and want to play around see if you can find something that matches up to the specs of a midnight scorcher and sand it to 320 grit. This will give you an idea of how strong it is but will only last a few frames because the cover isn't the same as a midnight scorcher.http://www.bowlingballreviews.com/ball.asp?ballid=117

Gene,

The only ball on your list that I have tried is the Midnight Scorcher and it does well in heavy oil.  The ball surface starts out smooth, but after it has rolled in the oil for a while, it starts to get 'fuzzy' like the particles are popping out.  Seems to get stronger in more oil.  It does not snap in the oil but seems to have a gentle arc where other balls are skidding.  I am not saying that it is any better than the other balls on your list because I havent had the chance to try them, but it does work well for me.

i would look into the scorcher. cant use it on anything but floods but it has a nice gentle curve that at least gives u a chance on lakes.

ok, i'll make it 5 for 5 in saying the scorcher. it is not the biggest hooking ball on the market, but in true flood conditions it will more than hold it's own. the more the oil the better it gets, nice even arc and plenty of hit. very rare that i come across a condition to use the ball as box condition is too strong for long island.

Gene,
You can write off the Super Freak and Phenom right now, the BCB is stronger than both. The Big Blue and Killer Instinct won't do it either. I have not thrown the Scorcher but the Super Carbide WILL NOT let you down, in fact it will amaze you, in a flood.

I Have both super carbide bomb and midnight scorcher. I can use the super on My house shot but cannot use the scorcher. The super gets down the lane and will hook harder off the dry. The scorcher on the other hand will pretty much roll out 10' past the arrows. Yes it is that strong. I have used the scorcher with much succes playing the heavy OB in regionals and sweepers and it has one me lots of money by being able to do so. If thier is dry any where on the lane then the super would work but for controle and predictability on long heavy oil the scorcher is king.
