Keeping the breakpoint inside
« on: August 10, 2011, 05:50:39 PM »
By inside, I'm really only talking about like the 10-12 board. I have the problem of sending the ball out to the 5-7 board on a house shot, which of causes mostly any ball to overreact. My favorite line is in between the second and third arrow, but what do I need to do to keep myself from leaking it right? I'd like to keep the breakpoint more inside so that if I do miss to the right a bit, it comes back but if I pull it a little, it holds.

Keep your shoulders square, and work on being more consistent. The oil along with the angle you are throwing the ball is what keeps it going right.

Instead of forcing yourself to play a certain line (which can cause tension and worsen the situation...) you could also try to change the release when everything else is and feels fine. Extending the skid phase and slightly delaying the breakpoint can do the trick effectively - I tend to suffer from the contrast of your situation, because I shy away from playing ever deeper once the THS really opens up. I keep my line too tight, by tendency, but over/under is also an issue once the mid lane area fades away. Therefore, I slightly uncup my wrist and/or add some axis tilt, which pushes the ball further down the lane but does not make it hook more/earlier. Sometimes only subtle changes do the trick, but I find this option easier to control than making bigger movements on the approach (which can, ultimately, be the better solution, though. It always depends on what the lane yields and how the feeling is).

I also like to target further down the lane toward my breakpoint when I am trying to play  tighter.  It keeps me from opening up my shoulders or just play having too much out angle through the heads.

I do not care about my break point.  The system I use is a 3 point targeting system and I adjust off of reaction as opposed to break point.  Right now I am bowling on a 39 foot house pattern(hate house shots)  The sweet spot is the 8 board at 39 feet.  I know my lateral movement and adjust from there.  If I hit the 8 board and make the proper first adjustment I am locked in.  I can hit the 8 board at 39 feet over 90% of the time.  The rest is proper entry angle.
