How do you shoot spares?
« on: January 07, 2013, 12:42:24 PM »
Do you use a spare shooting system? Do you use a plastic ball or just flatten out the ball you have in your hand already? Do you shoot your washouts from left to right or right to left?

Spare shooting has always been a strength of my game. Just curious what everyone else is doing to cover the leftovers.

Polar Ice.  Straight at everything except the four or the seven.  I'm weird, I know...

I feel that way too.  I switched from a plastic ball to coming up the back of my hook ball and throwing straight (could never get the same grip/feel in plastic ball).  My % has gone way up this year, even had my first 30 clean...:-D.  Straight at all.

Several years back, there was an article about Walter Ray going more than two full seasons on tour without a single pin miss.

Hmm.. i use my Natural Urethane for spares and dry lanes.

Still left to right for 3-6-9-10s and right to left for 2-4-8-7s.

Just same swing and no work on the wrist at the release point.

Its fun and helps me keep an open space for additional ball option. Urethanes are great for dry lanes playing the outside too.

I am so fussy about the fit of the ball, that I feel whatever I would gain by going to a designated spare ball in terms of it's reaction (or lack thereof) I would lose more by the ball not feeling exactly the same in my hand (even when the balls are measured and proven to be drilled identically, I can perceive the slightest variation).

Have tried plastic on occasion for spares. Sometimes it saves me by not veering off target, and others it leaves pins by not having the same drive a reactive ball does.
