The Blame Game
« on: April 18, 2005, 03:44:16 PM »
This has got to be one of my favorite things to laugh at... I love hearing bowlers blame everything but themselves for their bad bowling... Ready... These lanes are to wet/dry; there's no shot, they don't maintain the backends, I hate this ball, I'm sticking/sliding to much on the approach, I only have one testicle... I think I have heard it all... Every one of us has bowled with someone like this at some point... These also seem to be the people that never improve and never try to correct the mistakes in their bowling whether it be form or approach... I have to deal with this every week so I'm just venting, feel free to add fuel to the fire

Yeah it's frustrating. I prefer to be honest and say that "I didn't have the skills or equipment to match up on this type of condition", or "I just can't figure this shot out", because it is true. And you don't feel helpless if you say that type of thing. You know what REALLY happened, and you can work toward fixing it. Whereas, if "The lanes are too dry", in your mind you have no options. They are "TOO DRY" and there's nothing you can/should do about it.

One type of thinking puts the elements in control, the other keeps you in control. Plus, If you always blame the elements: Were you really responsible for those honor scores, or was it just that "The lanes were FINALLY right"...

Indeed. They keep the humor in the game, least for me. Like this one guy who was on a team that I did a lot of subing for. He'd throw the ball in the gutter before it even got to the arrows, then state "Once you get into that outside oil, there is no hope of it coming back."

Sorry bud, I play that outside, and rarely find oil out there. Maybe you are refering to the oil in the gutters?

OH! Sun got in my eyes. Do they ever clean the pin deck?
I think I have heard them all at one point. Use to use them from time to time myself. Now I know it is me. Usualy being stubern. Had to go to my "C" game sat. and I never try to adjust that much as quickly as I did. SOme time just smile at some one as they start to make excuses. tics them off more.

quote:
Many times its too painful for an individual to admit to lack of ability, therefore, they look for an excuse to blame for their poor showing.

Maybe its more mentally healthy to blame things other than oneself.

A psychiatrist who was dying from an incurable disease said all during his days of practice, he encouraged patients to face reality, but now that he was facing the reality of death, he said it was difficult to face that fact and at times even he would tell himself that a miracle cure would be found just in time to save his life, even though he knew that was improbable.

He said if he had it to do all over in his practice, he would not push people to always face reality.  He said he now understands why people turn their back on reality and choose to convince themselves that forces outside their control are causing their problems.

Maybe those bowlers who always find an excuse for their bad bowling will keep coming back hoping that the conditions will be different and allow them to bowl the way they think they are capable of.

Maybe if they faced the reality that they just suck, they would quit.

Awesome insight Bones, and I am sure that many would quit if they realized that they were not as good as they thought, but that might not be a bad thing.
They may realize that they don't actually enjoy bowling, now that it is THIER problem, not the laneman/ball/one testicle. People shouldn't force themselves to do something they don't enjoy, just beacuse they think they're pretty good at it. Just my opinion.

I hear 200 excuses as to why people don't bowl well in the leagues I bowl in- when they should be looking at themselves and see that they were having a poor release, missing their targets by a mile and/or having horrible timing issues among other things.

There are loads of people in my neck of the woods who stay in one area of the lane every week for 36 weeks of a season, and wonder why their scores float high and low so much because one week they'll have the world and the next week they are leaving washouts or big four splits.

The people I've been watching lately on Monday nights are the ones who leave pocket 8-10's or pocket 7-10's. They will stare at the shot a good 10 seconds in disbelief as if to say 'how dare those pins stand on a perfect pocket hit'... when you fully know that their release was weak, their timing was late and they got maybe 5 revolutions on the ball.

Yep- I'm nearing the end of a long fall season and longing for summer leagues to start.

Ha ha, sounds much like the league players in one of my bowling houses... throwing high-end balls with dubious release and awkward style, but unable to adapt to changing lane conditions and probably unable to play well anywhere else than the league house.

But when it does not work well, it is ALWAYS the lane (too oily, lack of oil, broken down lane etc.), the equipment, the approach (too slippery, too dry) etc.

It is so frustrating to hear these wimps complain, never looking at their own mistakes or inablities to make a change in their game with the situation at hand!

LOL...were all you guys standing at the back of our League last night....soon as the guy i was playing put his first ball down in practice..his words were Gawwddd what have they done to these lanes tonight...i knew i had him beat before i stepped on the lane. they were hard and not forgiving so i knew it would be a (get your spares tonight)which i did only had two opens (splits)and a 604.I played a shot which i dont like to but it got the job done. Its amazing that some bowlers as you all know will stand in the same place with the same ball all night and say I WILL MAKE THIS WORK.....but it just dont ..LOL

i don't blame the equipment, i just moan saying stuff like:

I cant throw in straight line
I am a moron
Worst shot ever

or I just laugh... its my only release.

take last night for example, i average about 165-170, and shot a 133-139-191, we won the last game... doh
Still, I didn't get angry, just smiled a lot.

I bowl with a few of these dolts.  Unfortunately last night, I wished I could have blamed somethine/someone else other then myself for the event that happend last night.  I average 203, and I bowled 215, 225 for the forst 2 games.  3rd game, 170....we lost the last game AND first place by 6 pins last night.  Way to go me.  I place the blame squarley on myself for that.  Team mates all bowled 210+ that last game, but if would have made a better adjustment in the last few frames, we would have secured first place, but I didnt.  Makes you feel really small in situations like that.

Hey sometimes those crosswinds help... Last year when I was bowling during Hurricane Francis, the roof blew off the building... Wind was actually helping me by just blowing the pins over.. I didn't even have to throw a ball..Easiest 300 I'd ever threw.. Of Course...People began complaining that it was too easy!!! Dam Whiners... I just can't win

I quit making excuses.  I tried 'em all and when I got to the bottom of the pile all I was left with was "It's me, I guess."
