The end of sport leagues in our town?

I am a firm believer in bowling sport leagues since joining the PBA Experience league last season.  I will only bowl sport league from this point on. However, this fall we may be losing it all together.  Our town has lots of good bowlers, but only a select few that really wants the challenge.  Last count I knew of, maybe 10 to 12 bowlers will be in the league and thats not fully committing. 

 

With some ideas thrown around, I suggested that the University of Arizona Bowling Club should join the league.  Haven't gotten an answer from the program leader but thinking it would be a great thing for them, since bowling collegate, the shots will be similiar for them.  Other than that idea, we don't know how to bring in more bowlers. 

 

What else can we do?  Our current format is doubles, 6 games moving a pair each game and its doubles. We pay $20.00 per week and most of it is lineage.  We are talking about dropping it to 4 games to add more to the prize fund.  It is handicap, and we change patterns after 6 weeks.  This fall is looking like the Kegel Patterns.

Small wonder this league is disappearing.
1. Moving every game AND playing 6 games takes a lot of time and effort, in addition to the mad dash of a doubles league. Most people will be exhausted and tired after all that running around. More running than bowling.
 
2. Handicap rarely offers the rewards for making good shots in a PBA league, in my personal experience and that of a friend who's a much better bowler than I am.  I'd split the league into 190 and above (house shot average)  for a scratch league and 190 and below (house shot average) for the handicap league.
 
3. $20 makes for a mighty small prize fund after paying $15 - 18 for the 6 games. I hate greedy bowlers who always seem to want the prize fund to go, 90% to the top two teams, but what you have left over after paying for 6 games of bowling has to be miniscule.

Our association has five(5) centers ranging from 6 to 32 lanes. Only one of them has a PBA Experience league but they have them all year long.......in the summer as well. The only real problem is that there are those who won't bowl in this house for one reason or another. They'd rather complain than try .

Many areas -- including mine -- have no Sport and/or PBA Experience leagues at all, with the exception of a summer league once in a while.

Trying to get college bowlers on  board is a good idea. From what I understand, all collegiate competition is done on sport shots.
 
But if a pure sport bowling league does not draw bowlers in, the next best thing could be a red/white/blue league. Has that been tried? Or a league that's bowled 50 % on THS and 50 % on PBAX shots?

Agree, seems like no one wants the challenge anymore.  At our center, one of the larger ones in NoCal Bay Area, fewer and fewer participants.  League runs year round in 3 sessions.  Everyone just wants to bowl on the super easy house shot.  I am wondering if the USBC changeover to the Team USA patterns has anything to do with the lessened interest.  Some of the centers in the immediate area are running non certified PBAX leagues and not sure how well they are doing.

I don't think any of the bowling alleys around here have ever had a sport league. Nothing but walled-up lanes and artificial high scores as far as I can see.


If Obamacare is so great why are so many waivers being asked for and given?
