The end of your approach.
« on: July 06, 2004, 08:16:34 AM »
I have a friend that plants, well its actually a walking stop.  He says that his knees don't hurt, but everyone and myself have been telling him to start sliding.  So a couple of weeks ago, he started sliding, quite good actually but he finds that  he has lost is accuracy, and his knees and back have begun to hurt.  Should I continue to aid him in his sliding or simply say, do what you feel best??

FWIW, there are three ways, as far as I can tell, to end your approach.  Plant, stop, slide.  I'm trying to learn to stop (like Haugen) because my knee is so unstable that I no longer trust it in a deep slide like I used to have.  Seems to me that my accuracy is better with the stop and I surely don't worry about my knee collapsing under me as I used to do.  I don't like planting - I think it's too much stress on the knee, hip and back (but what do I know?)  So, I guess my advice is, if the guy is really stopping, not planting, let him be.

I am a very poor slider and stoop a lot. It has gotten worse the past 10 months. Especially since I have gained weight and my stomach has gotten bigger. My question is.....what is the difference between plant and stop. Thought this might help my problem.

Brickguy, in my mind the difference between plant and stop is a matter of, for lack of a better word, aggression and torque.  Planters, imo, have a more aggressive style, with a more defined placing of the foot down at the line.  They will tend to be more open and create torque around the joints in the leg/hip.  Guys who stop take their steps, then, basically, just quit walking.  If you can find any film of Haugen I think he's classic at this.  For me, I do what I call "Stork-legging" it.  I take 4 steps, then remind myself to finish like a stork, with my left knee straight as much as possible.  I suppose there is a very small slide, even with my leg straight, but it's extremely minimal.

Rags, Thanks. I may try that. For what ever reason, I have never been a good slider, but it is worse than ever now. I think that is one reason my average dropped 12-15 Pins this past year. Any more it seems that I can't slide period, so I stoop which causes me to lose leverage as well as miss my target several boards on a bad day.

I have never seen Haugen bowl. I did notice a while back that Tom Baker seemed to have very little backswing and seemed to slowly walk to the line, but I never paid any attention to whether he had a slide or not. I think he was fairly erect at the foul line, but can't recall if he was or was not.

Brickguy, you mentioned "fairly erect."  That's what I try and maintain with my upper body.  I've not seen film of myself since doing what I now do, but I'd guess that my leg isn't straight up and down, but very slightly angled, with my foot slightly ahead of my hip, at release.

Rags, thanks for the tips. I'll try to concentrate on the "fairly errect" thing and see what happens. As bad as I have been doing the last 10 months, I don't have much if anything at all to lose.

I guess Im considered a stopper. On my 4th step I attempt to slide, but usually go about 2 inches and stop.

Going through your normal approach and delivery, if you're able to put your heel down first then your toe on the very last step without changing much of anything, it is a good indication that you're a "planter".
