Of course I'll be there again.  Hopefully I can talk the wife into showing up more.  I'll be playing golf as well.  Looks like there might be enough for two groups.  Mike, don't worry about the sand on Tanglewood's Championship course.  For me it was easier to count the shots where I wasn't in the sand.  I actually like the other course much better.  The course has less sand, plus it's set up to make you hit a wider variety of shots (instead of driver, sand wedge, sand wedge, sand wedge, sand wedge, putter )

There will still be a low entry no limit poker tournament at my house (less than 15 minutes from Creekside) Saturday night after dinner for those interested.  Billiards, darts, and home brew will also be available.

The time flies by faster than you think!!  I got dibs on Linda (if Glenn will share!! ) for the SD, too!!  Need to confirm, but Toma and I may actually get down there on Tuesday.  We're looking to play a round on the way down, twice on Wednesday and twice on Thursday -- I think that's were we left it.  Thursday is most likely going to be Tanglewood, unless more could play on Wednesday.  Like he said, we'll make firm plans as the date approaches.  Please let us know if you're interested....

For those who are in Winston-Salem Wednesday, if anyone wants to meet up for dinner, let me know.

I have been to the area 5 years now and never did any exploring of the area, so I plan to take in some of the country Wednesday.  Any suggestions for what to see will be appreciated.  I am not a shop-acoholic so malls are not high on my priority list.

The Biltmore, mansion and winery are a good way to kill at least a full day.

We hit some caverns driving from The Biltmore to Winston Salem, but don't remember what they are called.  Maybe 30-60 minutes east of the Biltmore.

Kat and I will be there barring any catastrophic event such as complete destruction of the western hemisphere due to a nuclear holocaust.  Even then, we may only be a little late

We'll likely arrive early afternoon on Friday unless something changes (Ron - please check your email).

I've invited my brothers and nephews to attend as well, but they're always a crap shoot at best.

I'll almost guarantee there will be a next year, and next year, and with any luck many many more next years.

I think this is the 3rd or 4th year it is around this same time of year.  The 1st one was in March, 2nd Memorial Day Weekend, and then we moved it to summer, after school lets out for me.

We can take the kids to Strider's work camp/day care.  There's grass to be cut, a deck to power wash + stain, a fence to paint...    Willy's kids might be a little young, but I'm sure we can find something to do with all their energy.

4 more days of teaching - 1 Pupil Free Day - then it's SUMMER VACATION!

Who will be able to keep up with Joe?
Will the chaos twins wreck havoc and zap all the energy from the group?
Will Toma be able to convert all the creative spares/splits I leave for him in the Scotch Doubles?
and ....

Who will be the winner of the coveted T-Shirt from the Bragging Rights tournament?

Just over 1 month until The Gathering begins and the answers will be revealed.  I am looking forward to seeing everyone again and meeting the first timers.

I thought I was going to have to come back in here and say we'd called it off. We did have to shorten our vacation but at least we'll be there for this.

What time is everyone going to be getting to the bowl Friday? We thought we'd be coming in late Thursday night but now that's been changed to Friday after lunch.

My wife isn't sure she's going to bowl in the tournament, either. I was mainly asking to see what plans are for Friday afternoon stuff, if any.

Friday is very laid back.  Some arrive as early as 9 or 10 AM, whenever the center opens.  We get a few lanes and add as more people show up.  Lunch is usually when you get hungry and at the center.  Dinner has been around 6PM, but with the change in time for the Scotch Doubles it will either have to be earlier or after the tourney.

So whenever you get there, I can almost guarantee people will be there.  As for the tourney, you don't have to decide until that night.

Hi everyone, just wanted to let you know the Misses and I are heading out for our annual road trip to see the kids and their spouses up North this Sunday the 29th.   We're heading to Chicago, then Ohio, we're going to be gone about 4-5 weeks total but will see everyone on Friday, probably around 11 AM.  We will be driving from Ohio on Thursday so we might check in and see who is around on that evening after checking into the hotel.  Take care and see everyone soon!

Have a safe and enjoyable trip.  See you in NC.

I have the home brew.  I live very close to the gathering.  My house is where the poker and billiards party will be Saturday.  I have a few bottles of amber ale left, then some more recent batches of pale ale, oatmeal stout, Belgian white ale, and brown ale.  Someone local was selling a very nice 10 gallon set up that I missed out on purchasing.    It would have been nice to have my own grain mill and a real lauder tun.

That will be very interesting.  I already told my Tuesday Teammates I will not be bowling next week and Wednesday is a maybe, probably not.  With the Petersen the 17th and The Gathering the following week, I want the knee to be well rested.  Tonight I got through 2 games and had to bail, the knee was too tight.

This will require Ron's approval - we'll need a place to setup that doesn't create any legal liabilities and we'll need to use some electricity - I'm willing to donate the use of my ball spinner, polishes, cleaners, abralon pads, sand paper, scotch brite pads etc (within reason!) to my fellow bowlers while I'm at the event (Fri, Sat, Sun). With Ron's approval, we can set it up some place out of the way on the floor or on a table.  I have a containment bin/splash guard.

This will allow people to "see" and "feel" how a change in ball surface can change ball reaction. We can adjust your surface in the middle of your game so that you can judge for yourself what a difference in surface makes in ball reaction.

For those bowlers who never clean their equipment, it can be an eye-opener how much ball reaction can be restored with the simplest of cleanings.

To me, this site has always been about sharing knowledge and stories. I think this is a great way for each of us to learn more about surface adjustments and how they can help (or hurt) our game.

Of course if anyone is thinking of getting their own spinner, I'll share with you what I know about using them and you can give it a whirl.

I'm looking to set up tee times at Tanglewood for Thursday.   The Championship course is $37 to play all day.  It's a great course with many great views of the beach!!  Looking to go off pretty early in the morning so we can get 2 rounds in.  Please let me know if you are planning on playing some golf!

I'm glad my PBA league is Monday this year.  Last year I played 27 holes before my league and I couldn't find my butt with both hands!  I knew Tanglewood was $31 during the week, but hadn't looked at the all day rates yet.  Still a great deal.  I played the Championship course a few weeks ago and still really prefer the Reynolds course.

I know Susan's bustling around making sure everything's in place.

As an aside, do we have any of the actual times of the Sat. events locked down yet?  Or is it more of a "seat of da pants" sort of thing.  Wondering because trying to see when I have to get there for the tourney.

Although I'm sitting for the bar exam the following Tuesday and Wednesday, let me see if I can talk the wife into coming.  It's only about a 5 hour drive for us, and I can study during the drive.

I have several balls that haven't been drilled yet, and my wife has one ball yet to be drilled.  If there is someone around there that can give us a discount on the price of drilling, perhaps I can convince her that the savings will offset the cost of the trip.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Ron has us sign in with our real name an user name.  Lanes are set aside for us, so when you stop at the desk and say you are a part of the BR Invasion, you are pointed in the right direction.  We also introduce ourselves to eachother.  I always tell my screen name first.  After they get done laughing, I tell them the real name.

We did have name tags one year with the screen and real names.

I wondered that last year as well. Just come on in, jump on a lane, and everyone will introduce themselves to you.  Except for maybe a couple of the shy/shier ones (isn't "shier" a strange word?  At least, it looks strange) who will get pulled into the overall melee.

Tonight will be a good test of the knee.  I bowl the Petersen.  I have been taking my leagues off and resting the knee.  It feels a lot better, but still not 100%.  LL you're not the only one preparing excuses

Her feeling is that there will not be enough time to ready ourselves for our Vegas trip on Monday July 28. I was planning to use her as a partner in the SCOTCH DOUBLES .. looks like I now need a partner!

I will only be staying the one night .. have to leave on Saturday! I look forward to the get together and Saturday breakfast sounds GREAT!

Joe,
Kay will be missed.

You're leaving for Vegas Monday?  Will you be flying?  If so, what airlines?  The reason I ask is my flight out of Raleigh Durham has a stop and it is Vegas.  It would be funny if it was the same flight.

Also, if Toma doesn't mind sharing and you don't find a partner I'd be honored to partner up with you as well as Toma.

Susan,
You do really need to work on that shyness issue.  One of these years you'll come out of your shell  It will be good to see you again.

Knee update - I bowled the Petersen yesterday, 8 games pain free.  At least the knee was pain free, the ego definitely bruised Next year it is only the Blue Dot.

Aight.  It's official.  As a birthday present to me, my wife booked our hotel room and we are on for Friday PM, Saturday, and Sunday.  We used Priceline for the hotel and couldn't get the closest ones, but we got a room for $45 a night for a 15 minute drive to the center.  Far better than the $115/night it could have been.

See you all at Creekside on Friday afternoon/evening.

Assuming we're not both totally dead when we arrive, we're going to bowl the doubles event that night.

I never had any major issues with Atlanta.  Just try to stay away from traveling through at lunch time or 5 pm.  I always took the bypass (285) around the city as opposed to cutting directly through.  Use the car pool lane to maintain a fairly steady speed and avoid the idiots changing 7 lanes every 30 seconds.  I've never seen so many lanes with a 55 mph speed limit, not that anyone pays much attention to that near Atlanta.

I'll be of all week, so if anyone needs any assistance, give me a call.  PM me if you want the number.

I'm going to be there Friday morning (or early afternoon) .. just this morning my wife started backing out of the trip.

See all of you on Friday .. have a safe trip!

It costs $4.99 for entire stay.  It is the most reasonable I've seen anywhere I stayed.  Let them know when you check in and they'll give you the password/login id

On the flip side (no offense, John), I don't have any videos of myself anywhere, and very few pics, and would prefer to keep it that way. Just personal preference. I think if anyone starts shooting video they should have the courtesy to ask whether their subjects want to be filmed. I will definitely opt out.

On edit - I went to the website and it says wireless internet.  If you don't have wireless, you might ask at the desk if there are other options.  Two or three years ago I had a computer without wireless and brought an ethernet cable and was able to plug in.  It was something like $3.99/ stay at that time.

I will say I have stayed at a few places with free wireless access, for example where I stayed in Chicago - Baymont Inn & Suites.  I've also paid $10/ 24 hour period.

You're a good husband, Jon. Possibly as well trained as I am.
Everyone can participate, league membership isn't required.  Without an established average I think you bowl scratch in the Scotch doubles, but it's a lot of fun anyway. We're so looking forward to this trip, seeing old friends and making new ones.

No training about it, my friend. I'm one of the few who does not go around talking smack about married life. It amazes me how many people are not happy in their relationships. As I said in a previous reply, my wife has been in France for the past three weeks. Sure, the "alone time" allowed me to get some projects done around the house, but I miss her dearly. I don't know what I would do without her.

Perhaps I should have used a wink, rather than the smiley. I'm with you, friends.  It took a long time to find, but I wouldn't trade my married life now for my former single life for anything.  I joke about how well trained I am, but it's mostly that I'm amazed in the change in my mindset, and I'm appreciative of the difference.

Looking forward to seeing everyone again and meeting some new people.
If anyone is in on Wednesday we are running a handicap sweeper with two squads (6:30 & 8:30). Bowl 3 games on 3 different oil patterns. We do this every Wednesday night and it has been a lot of fun. There has been a good mix of cashers each week between scratch bowlers and handicap bowlers.

Janderson,
No need to bring a spinner, you can use the one in the pro shop, just brings your pads and polish.

We have coated the whole bowling center with rubber to get ready for the Chaos Twins.
Everyone have a safe trip and see you SOON!!!.

Sure there's no cause/effect there?  No correlation?

You'll get to meet my wife at the gathering. You won't like her one bit more than anyone else.

Not really.

She is a French major. She will be teaching high-school French and Spanish. This is the third year in a row she has gone across the pond. The first two trips were 10 days. Those two trips involved mostly sight seeing, history, and speaking the native tongue with the locals.

This time was quite different. She spent a full two weeks studying in a French university. It was mostly work and little play.

She only needs a couple more required classes before she is on the loose as a teacher. It's pretty exciting. She is doing it strictly because she wants to. It's fun for me to see her achieve her dreams.

I have arrived.  Not a great trip.  It started with the FlyAway bus and a late arriving family who I guess though everyone should move seats to accomodate them.  Followed by getting chewed out by a guy who can't read numbers.  Late departure from Phoenix and a 4 hour flight with the lady next to me deciding she was entitled to take part of my seat also and the last hour with the kid behind me getting restless and kicking the seat (he was traveling with his slightly older brother - no parents).  The joys of air travel .

But after an attempt to get me to pay an additional $22/day for a car with remote locking/unlocking capability and cruize control, I got one without the extra cost Aside from periods of blinding rain, the trip from Raleigh - Durham to Winston-Salem went well.  Check-in was smooth, I've had dinner and all is good.  Since the day started at 3AM on about an hour or two of sleep, it is chill time.

Travel safe and see you all soon.

As for the Wednesday sweepers, I'll probably come and watch.  The knee is better, but the flight time did not help it at all.
