The Gathering 2009 - UPDATE
« on: November 17, 2008, 03:37:33 PM »
I heard from Ron and he is good for whenever we decide.  The group had to make a decision to skip Vegas.  SOOOOOO let's make it official for July 24 - 26.

For those new to BR, this is an annual gathering of bowlers from all over.  It basically involves bowling, socializing, bowling, eating, bowling, eating, bowling, drinking, bowling, eating, and oh did I mention bowling .  Our own Magic Carpet, Mrs Magic Carpet, and the staff at Creekside host this gathering each year.  They are amazing!

Friday night the center has a Mixed Scotch Doubles that many participate in.  Saturday is the Bragging Rights Tournament for the coveted "Bragging Rights Champion T-Shirt."  Sunday, for those who hang around, Ron offers some one-on-one coaching.  For those who arrive early, it is impromptu.

Toma and Nollster have traditionally organized some golfing and Strider has opened his house for pool and poker Saturday night after the "official" dinner at "Golden Corral."

Many stay at the Extended Stay, Haines Mall.  Due to a situation last year, I personally will be looking at other options.

Creekside Lanes
1450 Trade Mart Blvd
Winston-Salem, NC 27127
(336)771-9800

Hotel most have stayed at in the past:
Extended Stay America Winston-Salem Hanes Mall Blvd
1995 Hampton Inn Ct
Winston-Salem, NC 27103
(336)768-0075

As details are finalized, I will update with specifics.  I have been to the previous 6 and always look forward to the next one.  If you are even remotely considering attending, do so, you won't regret it.  I realize the current economic times may make it tough, but I am looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.  This year I plan to do more than be scorekeeper at the Bragging Rights Tournament !

July 24 - 26 is the last weekend in July.  It could also go to the July 31-Aug. 2.  I personally prefer the latter rather than the former for personal, selfish reasons (i.e. 'I get paid that weekend'), but that's not a reason to change what has normally happened in the last full weekend of July.

At this time, the national event is only scheduled to run through July 23rd. It's a real possibility that it will be extended beyond that, but I'd guess that the group from Creekside already have their dates.

July 24-26 works and it basically the same weekend as the 2008 gathering.

While we could probably do either, the July date would probably work better for us.  I'm looking forward to it, especially this year.  I can't bowl again until Dec 9th, so I've been jonesing.  I should have all my strength back by then, too.

I'd prefer July, but would go whenever the group decides is best. The sooner the dates are set, the better. I just need to write myself in for vaca time at work.

My wife and I enjoyed our first Gathering this year. We plan to relocate to NC eventually, so we use some of our time to scout out the area. I am looking forward to seeing you all again!

Jess, not exactly hurt, and thanks for asking.  I don't think I posted this here, but I had to go in Oct 14th to have an aortic aneurism fixed and a leaky aortic valve replaced. It's been quite an experience, but I managed to make it through ok with just minor complications.  I'm now the bionic man. I went back to work on Nov 11th on "light duty" so I'm definitely on the mend. I guess the doc wants to make sure my ribs and chest have knitted back together before I can bowl again, and it's driving me crazy just watching.

Wow! That's a little more than a twisted ankle there, for sure. (g)

Glad to hear you made it through the surgery OK. A leaky valve is what ultimately led to the passing of one of my favorite authors, Lewis Grizzard. That stuff is no joke.

Kevin, it's probably good that you caught that now. It sounds like something that could have developed into a rupture and death. Kat and I know an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) survivor, which is rare. Glad to know you have gotten things fixed. Was the doctor able to recommend a good beer to speed your recovery?

Thanks, J, and say hello to Kat for us.  My doc just suggested I keep to my normal level of consumption (YES!!) so my INR number steadies out, and they can adjust my dosage of anticoagulant to my lifestyle.  I've been on a Doghead Pumpkin beer kick lately.  It's a little expensive, but really good!
I saw my cardiologist today and he said I'm doing well and that it was good I had it done now as I might not have lasted another 6 months.  I felt fine, though, just a little short of breath sometimes. Mostly it's just been a big pain in the convenience, shall we say.  I go for another echo next Monday to check the function of the heart muscle. I think I'm a little better every day.

Kevin - WOW! I am glad to hear you are doing fine, but the thought that we might have lost you is mind boggling.  Take care of yourself and as others have said it is great you got it taken care of.

I didn't respond earlier due to internet issues at home - Verizon has benn working on the lines to upgrade and that meant mostly a down system

I look forward to seeing you and Diane in NC.

Hey, thanks everybody!  I didn't know I was so popular.

Blasenmir, I had some nurse tell me not to drink, that it would lower the number, and it was lower right after I came home, but I was just metabolizing it from being more active.  I did some research and talked to the doc and basically found out she was full of beans.  I'm not one to binge, but I like my wine and beer on pretty much an regular basis.  My number has been between 2.1 and 2.9 so far, so I think my dosage fits. At least currently.  I don't eat many greens so diet isn't much of a factor.

Coll, it would take a lot more than a mere operation to keep me from the Gathering.

I'd like to stress that the aneurism had not ruptured or grown in the last year, but the valve had seriously deteriorated.  That's why we made the decision to go in for the operation.  I had an aneurism in my left iliac artery that I had stented a couple of years ago, and that's when the aortic one was found and we started keeping an eye on it. At no time was I in immediate danger, but I just couldn't put it off after the valve was found to be leaking.

Joe, thank you also, and I'm looking forward to giving you a run for the Energizer Bunny award this year.

Now enough about me and the hijack of this thread and let's get back to talking about the Gathering!  Once again, thank you all.
