What are the reasons for drilling away the side weights?

Depends on what you mean by "drilling away".

If you mean removing the side weights, then they are removed to make the ball legal by ABC/USBC rules which govern the balls we can use.

A ball can only have 1 oz side (positive or negative) and finger (positive) or thumb (negative), or 3 oz top or bottom weight.

If you mean something else, please explain.

Er, my doubts actually came after my driller told me that my ball needs a extra hole drilled. It stirs my mind wondering why is there a need for a extra hole.

Yup...Legal Stats would be my bet as well.

I drilled a ball for a customer this past Friday and he asked me why there was an extra hole in his ball and what he should do with it.  Took a while to explain the whole weight limit rule, etc. but he seemed happy to know about it.
