USBC affirms decision to revoke approval of two Motiv balls

ARLINGTON, Texas – The United States Bowling Congress has affirmed the decision to revoke USBC approval of the Motiv brand Jackal and Jackal Carnage bowling balls.
Motiv requested an appeal of the March 15, 2016 decision to revoke approval of the balls for non-conformance with current specifications and requirements in the USBC Equipment Specifications and Certifications Manual. USBC testing showed a significant percentage of the Jackal and Jackal Carnage exceeded the maximum 0.060" differential radius of gyration standard specification during spot checks of balls in the field.
The USBC Equipment Specifications Committee heard the appeal, reviewed the facts and circumstances, and has affirmed the revocation decision: The Jackal and Jackal Carnage remain on the USBC non-conforming equipment list and unapproved for use in USBC certified competition.

Hopefully this will put to rest some of the Motiv bashing. If Motiv appealed the March decision and it has taken this long for USBC to respond, then the ball appears to not have been in Motiv's court.
It also seems that USBC may have hinted at how long the appeal process would be since Motiv has indicated September time frame as the potential date for an LE ball.
If it were me, I would simply reproduce the Trident with a different color scheme and perhaps a tweak on the coverstock, but we'll see.
-
Nothing I can find on the Motiv website about it yet. Perhaps later today, but it seems(to me) they should have either sent emails and/or updated the website already.
-
Agree milo, I would have assumed they had a prepared response either way and implemented immediately upon the result.

Even with them banned, the Jackal Pro (Korea), and Sapphire Jackal (Japan) remain legal. :o Would be fun to whip those pieces out and win some events with them lol :P

You don't even have to go that far. The Raptor P7, Raptor Attack and Raptor Talon all used the same core with the same specs.

Just a bystander here, but if USBC had reversed it's decision then they are in essence saying "sorry for all the commotion, but we were wrong before; but now we're right." :-\
Then, in the future, when could we believe that they actually have a clue? Do we believe them when they make other such judgments? Or do we wait for the second time they test to believe them? USBC had no choice but to stick with their decision or they look like amateurs.
Personally, that minor difference in the core would be no advantage in the hands of 99% of bowlers, however, USBC has their spec limits and they must be adhered to by all companies, or why have them in the first place? How far out of spec is immaterial. The limits are the limit...
If one were used against me in league I still would not care (personally) because the difference, at least in my mind, is very small.
Anyone who was holding their breath and hoping for a reversal has a better chance of a visit from the "real Easter Bunny". ;)

If it were my decision, and I know its not - so stay calm, I would just give everyone waiting for the LE ball a brand new Trident and call it even.
Why even go through the expense of developing a new ball and go through the additional expense of the USBC approval process when everyone seems to love the Trident and would probably by happy with the Trident. Those that already have a Trident would now have two of them and most of them would probably be fine with that, too.
-
from what i read the le will be available to the public as well

Pretty much has been my thoughts all along. I know of several Carnage owners who just bought other brands instead of waiting for a decision and/or replacement. That is very likely lost future customers for Motiv.
Motiv can't expect their customers who used the Carnage last season(who by the way, had it taken out of their hands before the season ended) to start the league season without a heavy oil ball.
This entire thing has been poorly handled on Motiv's end. But that's just my opinion.
And for full disclosure, I'm as big a Motiv fan as you will find and I will continue to use their product. I just feel the brain trust at Motiv need to pull their head out of their a$$ on this one.

Where did you read that? I've followed this somewhat closely and haven't heard anything about availability as yet.

They should call it the Vendetta. Anyone that gets the joke should PM me.

This was the bottom line from day #1........
After an obligatory stomping of the feet, Motiv should have licked their wounds and did everything possible to immediately put the debacle behind them. Instead, they let the drama drag out and unnecessary left loyal customers in limbo.
Most diehards will probably stay with Motiv regardless. The bigger issue is potential customers on the sidelines who might have tried Motiv but are now convinced to stay away. Motiv is an unmatched bowling marketing machine, but they really set themselves back with this one.

Hindsight is 20-20. I agree they could have done better, but USBC had to pull the balls right away. We all know there's a rhyme and reason to release schedules and this was an unexpected bump in the road. They did the best they could with their current lineup, and produced a ball just for the inconvenience, from what I believe.

Except that many of us have called it from the beginning. It really wasn't that difficult.
I agree with most of the rest of your assessment, but Motiv didn't do the best they could with the public response to this "bump in the road". In the long run, that's what's going to be remembered more than anything else.
-
Maybe it is just me, but I can't fault Motiv for appealing the decision. I really doubt there was intent to deceive USBC by producing balls out of spec on purpose after the balls were originally slated as approved.
At what point do you scratch the appeal? It must have been known USBC wouldn't make a decision on the appeal till now based on the projected ball delivery by Motiv. USBC had Bowl Expo, US Opens and other summer related schedules that must have precluded them from being able to decide on the appeal. If it was such an open/shut case, then why even deliberate the appeal?
If you feel Motiv did you wrong and you don't want to support them, that is your decision. If you feel Motiv did others wrong and you don't want to support them, that too is your decision.
But the only people who should be making the decision of what is to be done is Motiv.

It's amazing what happens when you just state your opinion instead of saying your idea is the way things should go. People can agree/disagree with you.
I think just going with the Trident would be a good starting point. They're not necessarily going to need to develop a whole new ball unless they want to modify the Jackal core.
If I needed an oil ball still I'd want the Trident, if I didn't need an oil ball I'd hope they would modify the Jackal core and give it an angular reaction to replace the Primal Rage spot in their lineup
-
2 Tridents would be very nice. I've been asking around and honest staffers agree, it's pretty nice.

It will simply be called the Jackal le...motiv issued a statement last night

Yet still no email and noting on the Motiv website.

They announced it on the Facebook page saying the Jackal LE is approved by the USBC

This is now up on the Motiv website under News.
MOTIV® MOVES FORWARD WITH NEW USBC-APPROVED JACKAL LE
MOTIV® is reviewing the USBC’s decision to not reinstate approval of the Jackal and Jackal Carnage bowling balls, and is considering its options going forward. Nevertheless, MOTIV® is pleased to announce that the new Jackal LE (Limited Edition) has been approved for all USBC certified competition. The USBC-approved Jackal LE will be produced and distributed in accordance with the previously announced MOTIV® Ball Exchange Program.

Thank you for a final decision. Motiv makes great products and has been my #1 seller last 2 years. This was a bad situation from the get go and IMO could have been handled a lot more professionally by both sides. Now that a decision is made and the Jackal LE will be the replacement, let just hope that they ship to the people that have been waiting since March first and not get some of these to staffers and other "select" people. Would be another black eye to see videos posted and forum posts on how great this ball is. But we all know how the bowling industry goes.

Agreed, Motiv needs to take care of their customers first.

Since this is a ball that is being manufactured specifically as a replacement ball and not for general distribution (I AM on Facebook and have seen nothing remotely official to suggest otherwise), then I fell pretty confident that the customers who registered will be the ones getting the ball straight away.
