USBC affirms decision to revoke approval of two Motiv balls

Published: August 9, 2016 | Bowl.com

ARLINGTON, Texas – The United States Bowling Congress has affirmed the decision to revoke USBC approval of the Motiv brand Jackal and Jackal Carnage bowling balls.

Motiv requested an appeal of the March 15, 2016 decision to revoke approval of the balls for non-conformance with current specifications and requirements in the USBC Equipment Specifications and Certifications Manual. USBC testing showed a significant percentage of the Jackal and Jackal Carnage exceeded the maximum 0.060" differential radius of gyration standard specification during spot checks of balls in the field.

The USBC Equipment Specifications Committee heard the appeal, reviewed the facts and circumstances, and has affirmed the revocation decision: The Jackal and Jackal Carnage remain on the USBC non-conforming equipment list and unapproved for use in USBC certified competition.

Maybe it is just me, but I can't fault Motiv for appealing the decision.  I really doubt there was intent to deceive USBC by producing balls out of spec on purpose after the balls were originally slated as approved.

At what point do you scratch the appeal?  It must have been known USBC wouldn't make a decision on the appeal till now based on the projected ball delivery by Motiv.  USBC had Bowl Expo, US Opens and other summer related schedules that must have precluded them from being able to decide on the appeal.  If it was such an open/shut case, then why even deliberate the appeal?

If you feel Motiv did you wrong and you don't want to support them, that is your decision.  If you feel Motiv did others wrong and you don't want to support them, that too is your decision.

But the only people who should be making the decision of what is to be done is Motiv.

If it were my decision, and I know its not - so stay calm, I would just give everyone waiting for the LE ball a brand new Trident and call it even.

Why even go through the expense of developing a new ball and go through the additional expense of the USBC approval process when everyone seems to love the Trident and would probably by happy with the Trident. Those that already have a Trident would now have two of them and most of them would probably be fine with that, too.

It's amazing what happens when you just state your opinion instead of saying your idea is the way things should go. People can agree/disagree with you.

I think just going with the Trident would be a good starting point. They're not necessarily going to need to develop a whole new ball unless they want to modify the Jackal core.

If I needed an oil ball still I'd want the Trident, if I didn't need an oil ball I'd hope they would modify the Jackal core and give it an angular reaction to replace the Primal Rage spot in their lineup

2 Tridents would be very nice. I've been asking around and honest staffers agree, it's pretty nice.

Thank you for a final decision. Motiv makes great products and has been my #1 seller last 2 years. This was a bad situation from the get go and IMO could have been handled a lot more professionally by both sides. Now that a decision is made and the Jackal LE will be the replacement, let just hope that they ship to the people that have been waiting since March first and not get some of these to staffers and other "select" people. Would be another black eye to see videos posted and forum posts on how great this ball is. But we all know how the bowling industry goes.

Agreed, Motiv needs to take care of their customers first.

Since this is a ball that is being manufactured specifically as a replacement ball and not for general distribution (I AM on Facebook and have seen nothing remotely official to suggest otherwise), then I fell pretty confident that the customers who registered will be the ones getting the ball straight away.
