Thumb swelling/changing weather:
« on: March 14, 2013, 01:24:58 PM »
Is it just me or does the changing weather/season seem to affect thumb size/swelling? All  winter long I've been able to use just 1 piece of 1" white tape on the top of thumb hole, now the last few weeks I've been hanging up in the ball and find myself dropping to a piece of 3/4" white or none at all. Lately I've been using a ball I don't use regularly due to the thumb being significantly looser than my other equipment fitting just right all of a sudden. I use a molded thumb so I'm not sure if I should get a new thumb done or just convert all my thumbs to the IT system. I don't think I'm gaining weight, so I don't see how

I usually fight this battle in the summer when it is humid....I do tape up in the winter but, for me, the summer is when I struggle getting my thumb perfect.

I don't know if you have seen them, but they make "thumb socks". I just got some and it shrank my thumb immensely. They are hard to get used to and I had to add quite a bit of tape but no swelling. I am one who swells daily, but once you get the fit and get used to using it, no more swelling issues or hanging up. Now if you squeeze you are gonna drop the ball so take some time getting used to coming out of the ball clean.

Your thumb and fingers not only swell with humidity but also with body fluid retention, like when you drink more beer than you're used to drinking or you eat more salty foods.

Your thumb hole has to be as large as your thumb will ever get. If you happen to have to bowl early in the morning, for a tournament or a make up session, you'll also find your fingers larger than they are in the evening, when most of us bowl. Try putting your fingers in the holes right after you wake up in the morning. If you've never done that before, I think you'll be shocked.

I have a make-up session on Sunday, April 7th, at 10 AM, when we normally bowl at 6:20 PM. I expect to have to take out 2 to 4 pieces of 1" ape from my thumb holes!!!

Solution: Get a bag of ice and hold it with your bowling hand above your head between shots. Sure you will look funny, but it will save you from having to take that tape out. :P
