A good ball for my father-in-law?

Hey everyone,

I know way more about equipment than any reasonable human being needs to know, but I'm still lost when it comes to finding a good ball for my father-in-law. He's bowling league this year after being out of the game for more than 20 years. He's never thrown resin. Heck, I don't even know if he was using urethane the last time he rolled league. Anyhow, I've seen him throw the ball a few times and he's not bad by any means. He's a down-and-in player with average speed and slightly below average revs. My thoughts are to pick him up something that will allow him to play in that comfort zone off of the corner. I was thinking of something like a power groove, big hit, scout, you know, something mild that will be controllable yet offer him a great deal more hit and carry than what he's thrown in the past. The house shot that we face is medium up front with very clean backends. As the night goes on, the heads go but there is really never carrydown, so that shouldn't be a problem. Any suggestions that you all can provide will be appreciated.

I would say hands down get him a sonic x pearl.  I love that ball for being able to move my feet right and play more down and in.  That ball has a ton of length and hits really well with a great price tag.

Your father-in-law's style sounds very similar to my fathers.  I just recently got my dad a power groove, and there's been an improvement in his carry and score.  He had been out of bowling for about 3 years, and this was his first experience with a reactive ball.  He'd used a urethane black rhino previously.

If his speed with allow it, a Goliath might be a decent ball.  However, if he cannot keep the speed up or doesn't want to alter the original surface of the ball, I'd look to more conservative reactive ball like the Sonic Boom.

Buy him a whole arsenal, and maybe he won't make you and your wife sleep in separate beds next time you visit! LOL.

I've not used it enough to get a complete read on the Visionary Centaur but this ball is definietly a down and inner.  2.61 RG and .015 differential.  1"-2" flare.  Drilled mine relatively strong for a house wall shot and I am pleasantly surprised.  This ball is roll and arc no over reaction as some of the pearls listed might do.  

I believe this ball to be the league players god send.  As long, as you are playing on a THS this is a definite possibility.

As someone who was in your father-in-law's position four years ago, I think I can give you some good advice.

He has low revs, which means he needs some help, so don't stick him with a weak ball that will have him following his (probably) natural inclination to hit up on it.  Get him something strong, but smooth, something like a Vendetta Particle Pearl, or a Storm Super Charge.

Why not drill up one of your used pieces, use that as a benchmark to get him something stronger/weaker to fill the need.  That should also give you a read on what drilling to put on it.
