The Next Logical Move...?
« on: October 17, 2014, 08:00:29 AM »
Looking for opinions or advice:

My wife got into bowling this year and I got her a Scout Reactive and a Plastic ball. She's still working on her fundamentals but overall her game has improved a lot. She went from averaging 78 to 135. She recently asked me when would be a good time to get her a new ball that isn't for "beginners" and I told her what she has right now is good for what we are currently doing with working on her game. But she has become more adamant that she wants another ball because she thinks she has outgrown her Scout Reactive.

I am trying to figure out what I should get her because I feel like I am fighting a losing battle and eventually going to have to get her another ball, but I do not know what to get her. I don't want to get her a ball that is going to overwhelm her and I don't believe she needs any high price balls yet because she is still learning the basics.

Any advice is appreciated.

Take her to a good shop where they'll take her out on the lanes and let her express her wants and get expert advise from a third party.....

That way you'll have someone who can make a good recommendation if needed and someone who won't sell you something you don't need (if they're a good shop obv).

If you want to stay with Columbia, look into the Freeze line. They have multiple balls, still more entry level, and you should be able to find one to fit her game.

Others to look at include:
Storm Tropical Breeze line
Roto Grip Scream/Shout
Ebonite Cyclone line

My questions are what is she looking for the new ball to do that her other one is not doing?  Or does she just want a new ball?  Is there something she see's when bowling next to league bowlers as far as what there equipment does that she would like to learn?  There is so much going into buying a ball from what kind of core, coverstock material, her style of bowling, surface of the equipment and drilling.  So I would second the motion of going to the pro shop and have them watch her and give you a couple of ideas.

She is having difficulty articulating what exactly she wants. From how she is explaining it she wants a ball that recovers more like the other people on her team.  I'm pretty sure they are influencing her pushing for another ball, but I keep telling her that just because you have a bunch of shiny toys doesn't make you a better bowler.

Tell her you are signing her up for a lesson from a certified instructor if you havent already.  I went through this same thing with my wife 2 months ago.  She didnt understand why I get the "good more expensive balls and why I kept telling her to get a Freeze or Cyclone.  Took her to my pro shop guy and he mentioned a lesson first and then ultimately he ended up recommending the Cyclone anyway.  Her average has increased by 16 pins since that lesson.  She is very happy with her results.

At 135 there is no chance she is being held back by the ball.  Tell her she's got to hit the one in front more often for the ball to matter.

While the replies so far make much logical sense, this is something you need to remember:
WOMEN ARE NOT ALWAYS LOGICAL CREATURES!

I was in much the same position as you are. I tried and tried to explain it to my wife as well, but ultimately, she would not listen, and I ended up buying her a new ball (a black hammer).

I did, however, but my self one as well, and it was the exact same model she wanted to replace because she was told it was no good. (an lt-48)

When she continued to average about the same with her new ball, and I was still shooting 600 or better at times, with one like her old one, she got my meaning. She didn't like it much, and told me so, she also finally understood.

Times have changed a lot more than women have.

maybe they are treating bowling balls like shoes now??  JK. lol. The means of finding an instructor and getting lessons first would be a start before looking at bowling balls.

Look, she's your wife, life will be better if she's happy.  Watch for a clearance on any ball above entry level reactive resin and order it for her birthday, anniversary, Christmas, or "just because I love you".  --  JohnP
