Forget everything you know about bowling on a house shot. Leave the aggressive stuff home- urethane or plastic is your best bet. To put things in perspective, you will see your ball do things you didn't think possible.
Fried heads with soup on the back ends, pins deliberately off-spt, no dots or arrows to work with...
I would say do a search back about a year, but the powers that be took that option away by deleting alot of good material.
180-190 across should get you some cash back.
-
Don't they only allow you to check in two balls? I think balls tend to get beat up a bit as well, so don't take your top of the line stuff. I always thought if I went I would take a Thunderflash and a Slate Blue Gargoyle.

Only two balls allowed, no shadow balls, no reracks unless a pin is missing. Bowl 8 across 16, every lane has a different "pattern". The old house was notorious for chewing up balls, especially if you happened to have a big string going. The new house doesn't have that problem, they simply convert the lanes over to the Petersen "shot".
No dots or arrows on the lane, they cover the heads with grey guardian to hide the markings. Poles are put up between the lanes to give the same effect the old above ground ball returns had.
Pins are old and really chewed up, 2-3 pins in each rack are deliberately set off spot.
Score of 1600 will either give you a very large check or win the tournament.
Best equipment to take is plastic and urethane.
Thongprincess is a glutton for punishment, we're going to shoot it sometime in August.
If you only bowl 1 tournament a year, this is the one to make it too. Most fun I've ever had shooting sub 100s.

No problem Pepper. TP is planning on flying into Chicago, I'll pick her up, shoot the petersen then we're heading for Cincy for the Hoinke, tentative dates look to be around 21-22 Aug. She has some friends (yes, she claims she really does)from LA heading for Cincy, just trying to fit everyones schedule together.

That would be great Doc. Contact Colleen for the details. I'll just work my schedule around you guys. Chicago is only about 5-6 hours from me. Would be great to see you two again. I know a few other BR members in that area that may be able to join us.

I bowled in it twice and will never again. Broken pins,
pins offspot, different weight pins, ball damage, etc...
Oil conditions are different on each lane and go from
bone dry to ice. In my opinion its a big waste of time
and money.

As to your other comments of...Broken pins,

I've not seen anyone with ball damage at the current location of the event. The offspot and off-weight pins coupled with the challenge presented by trying to read the lanes and figure out which pair is the dead-walled pair are precisely why most still go to shoot the event. If it was a complete waste of time, you wouldn't see tour players and a good number of the Midwest Region players shoot it year after year. If you can figure it out, there is some nice money to be made.

Everyone is right about the petersen. the laws of physics fail to exist when you bowl at the petersen. Usually on each pair one lane is burnt to a crisp and the other is flooded all the way down. No arrows, no dots, no shadow balls, the way the signs on each lane drop down from the ceiling and you think you are going to hit them on your arm follow through. Your ball will do things you thought were impossible. They did manage to bring some of the stuff over to the new place like the bell but I liked the old place better downtown. Every year I bowl in the Petersen, I say it will be my last but I keep going back. It is not uncommon for 200 average plus bowlers to bowl plenty of sub 100 games. You have to be crazy to bowl in the Petersen but my father in-law has bowled in 42 Petersen Classics. I call him insane. You should also try the lumberjack tournament once also. I have seen plenty of bowlers come out of their 8 game set shaking their heads and just disgusted.

Yes, I am a glutton for punishment and yes I do have friends. I even have ones I can convince to bowl tournaments with me

As I have told my friends, I am a bowlaholic and have not been able to find a 12 step program. So, I will just keep feeding my adiction

Lumberjack is even tougher. 5# solid pins. Just like lanes 71-72 at the Hoinke except you bowl a series instead of trying to string 6 strikes. If you've never seen a lily, just wait a couple of minutes.
BTW Future 155, sorry to have hijacked your thread. You'll love the experience.

Yeah I did those over the weekend, it was a treat. Didn't strike once,
although I think I might have figured it out at least from a physics stand point. I'll have to try and see if it works.

no problem srkegler. its just nice to be able to ask questions and receive some answers to it. i thank everyone who has replied to this topic , and welcome anyone else to add their input.
i've heard some of the things you guys are talking about from the people ill be traveling with. i just wanted to get all the information possible. the guy thats running this trip has been going for 31 years. so i guess he loves bowling too.
i dont know how true it is but, i was told from someone that somebody who was on the tour went to the petersen and had about 8000 in bets they would beat 150 their first game and , they shot a 97 and lost all their bets. i have no idea how true it is but that is something i was told.
-
i was thinking about taking out my tour power and, my x-factor. what are your thoughts on these two balls. TIA.
-
The petersen sounds pretty easy if you go in with the right strategy. For instance, I know a guy that averages 197 throwing a plastic ball dead straight end over end, about 22-23 mph and whacking the left hole while making most of his spares. He hardly ever misses the pocket on the leftside and if he does it's through the nose or pocket on the right side so go figure. So if I back him in the petersen I guess I'm garunteed money huh? since he takes lane conditions out of play and all...
I don't ssee why people are so hesitant to go back to throwing it straight as a dart at the pocket with 0 side tilt/rotation. He'll i'd bowl it, if it only takes like 170 or so to cash you're a shoe in going in with a plastic ball and whacking the headpin all day and making your spares. Has anyone ever done this?

Hitting the headpin isn't always enough. Especially when the head pin and five pin are off spot and broken. Hitting the head pin is easier said than done when your ball hydroplanes the last 10 feet. The Pete is very much like miniature golf except you never see the windmill.
Sr. Kegler, 71 and 72 at Western Bowl is in the parking lot.
67 & 68 is the heavy wood pair.
Good Luck!

I'll be bowling on my usual squad this year - August 26 at 11:45 AM. I bowl on a squad with what has been a growing number of Webers each year. When I first started, it was Dick, Rich, John, and eventually, Pete. Lately we have picked up Pete's wife and two of Dick's grandsons. Rumor has it that Pete's father-in-law will join us this year, giving the Webers and family two full pairs. In addition to the Webers, there are several regional players, and sometimes one or two other touring players. It's quite a squad (in spite of me
).
Future155 -
I would not recommend your choice of balls for the Petersen. As others have said, plastic (or rubber, if you have one lying around) and urethane are best at the Pete. You will have enough trouble controlling your ball reaction without having to deal with something reactive, as well. If you want to bring one of those, I would suspect that the Tour Power would be the better of the two. I would strongly recommend that your other ball be a plastic ball and that you be able to throw it straight, even on a carpet. You cannot afford to be missing spares at this tournament, because the strikes will most likely be few and far between. I bowled with a guy last year who shot a game in the fifties (I am not kidding) because he could not throw his ball (a mild reactive) straight and the pair hooked so much, he could barely keep it on the lane.
DP3 -
The strategy you suggest is a great strategy for a backup plan when you can't find a ball reaction on a particular lane. I take a Columbia Messenger Black (urethane) dull and my Target Zone (plastic) highly polished. If necessary, I can headhunt with either of those balls, just as you described. Last year, on one pair, I hooked plastic on the right lane and went straight at the headpin from the left side (I'm right-handed) with my urethane. I ended up high on the pair for the day, which made me some money (we have squad pots).
As most have said, just go in without any great expectations and have fun.

Rick, Let me see what I can do to rearrange National Mixed Championship in Reno and the Hoinke and Peterson. Maybe we could bowl the Hoinke 1st, then the Peterson and push National Mixed up to the weekend of the 19th of August.
SrKegler and Livespive, would the 26th work for you with the Hoinke before that? I haven't booked any travel yet.

TP, No problem on the Petersen for the 26th for me, thats a Wednesday for my work week, can either take off the 24-25-26, or 26-27-28. Whatever works best for you guys.
Rick, do you forsee any problems getting us added to your squad?

Getting sent away for work is the only thing that can ruin my plans,
and I don't plan to let that happen
Just let me know what you all decide on, It's easier for me to get there than
you, what works for you works for me.
