From a customers point of view, if I don't ask I can't expect to get a discount.
Nothing aginst set prices but like my girlfriend said you didn't ask, so I didn't give.

If I owned a SHOP .. I would have a difficult time posting your letter. Once you POST IT you NEVER CAN ADJUST your price to ANYONE .. if you DO reduce it .. NO ONE WILL EVER TRUST YOU AGAIN!

Simply state .. Our prices are the best in town .. if you find it cheaper in a 50 mile radius .. we'll meet the price!

Being as fair as you are .. this should attract customers!

You can't expect no haggling when some customers get a better price than others.

HAMSTER .. I apologize I must respond to SAWBONES.

SAWBONES. I was answering HAMSTER's request for COMMENTS! Now I'll explain my thinking further to you. If I went into the shop to BUY a BOWLING BALL ..do you think I CARE what problems the store keeper is having MEETING HIS BILLS? (read the suggested letter). I'm there to BUY A BALL .. I have my own problems. I'm there to find out WHAT THE BALL COSTS. I want to make sure the person who will drill it .. is someone I can trust (I'll do that before I enter the SHOP). I OWE NOTHING to the shop .. if I can get the ball CHEAPER some where else .. I'll measure the difference and determine if it's to MY BEST INTEREST to buy it there or go some place else.

As you can see I am saying the same thing as you in your 2nd paragraph .. your discussions on CAR SALES and DOCTORS don't pertain to buying a ball and require a different set of circumstances of which we are NOT TALKING TOO!

I would imagine that you agree that the wording of the HAMSTER document is acceptable as is .. so be it .. I've stated my reasoning .. that's what FORUM's are for .. OPINIONS!

To Joe-
I'm surprised you would advocate something that hurts the consumer - the low price guarantee.

Imagine you are a store owner selling Thingamajigs for $100.  Another store in town also sells Thingamajigs for $100.  They also promise to match any other price in town.  What incentive do you have to reduce the price to $95 knowing that the price will automatically be matched by your competitor?  Might as well keep selling it for $100.

I guess you're a LITTLE TO DEEP for me .. where is the CONSUMER being hurt? He gets the benefit of the LOWEST price available .. I know I'm missing something and I apologize for my ignorance!

We don’t give discounts to anyone. You start giving discounts and someone gets PO’d because they didn’t get as good a deal as the next guy. We price our equipment and services fairly and stick to the price.

Our business is based on service and getting the job done right. We do the best job of measuring and drilling in town. Almost everyone in town who has hand problems eventually end up in our shop to get measured and fixed. I would rather bowl with a K-mart ball that fits correctly than a new (fill in the blank) high performance ball that fits badly.

Our regular customers do get a lot of little things after the sale. We will tweak ball surfaces for free, any adjustments to holes, add a balance hole, replacement inserts at 50% off, free coaching as time allows, etc.
