some of us are at a disadvantage.........
« on: January 22, 2004, 12:05:14 PM »
I was considering posting a topic about how to get to the next level.  I decided that no matter what anyone provides for a suggestion, it doesn't matter.  I don't have access to a coach or even a local professional.  The closest professional bowler is probably in Minnesota.  I am not even positive about that.

I want to take my "game" higher, I feel the physical tools are in place just my mental game isn't what it needs to be.  I get down and overthink.

I brought this up b/c I was looking at the ABC Masters scores.  Some people have access to the greatest coaches in the world, some of us don't.  There are a bunch of people who could be better than they are with alittle coaching.

It is possible that I have been coached to the physical limits, I guess the mental part is up to me........

Andrew:  Some thoughts, take them for what they're worth, and consider the source...

Sounds like you're in need of some new challenges.  Unfortunately, given your location, you'll probably have to travel some in order to find them.  Is it feasible for you to bowl in any of the megabuck events, such as the Mini Eliminator, High Roller, TAC, or Super Hoinke?  Or are there any similar events that might be closer to you?

Funny you should mention the ABC Masters.  A friend of mine made the first cut.  He's not a PBA member, and he doesn't have a coach, but when he's back home, he bowls in just about everything he can find.  There's no substitute for tournament experience.

Best of luck to you with your game...and with the little one on the way.

Staying convinced that you throw the ball better than your competitors is good. Otherwise the mental part seems to be very individual. Good luck!

Thanks guys, I can't make it to the big $$ tourneys due to lack of $$.  I am trying to save up the money but you know how it works, one thing then the next.  Anyway, I hit a couple of scratch tourneys so far this year.  The first one I tore up but we didn't do so hot.  My partner and I were 38 over the first day and 400 over the second day.  I opened with a 751 and my partner went 204, 300, 201.  I smoked him series

The second tourney I went to was a rev block and he kicked my butt.  I lost all ball reaction after 5 or 6 games.  I ended up playing up 13 with my Basketball the last game, had I done that a game earlier I would have $$.

There is a BIG scratch tourney coming up in March, first place is $5000.  That would be nice.  That last guy to when a scratch tourney here averaged 243, basically THS with more volume.

Dean Hinitz in BTM has tons of great columns in every issue and he has a book out, called, "Focused for Bowling". He is a bowler and PH.D. in psychology.

Charlest,

I am considering a subscription to Bowling This Month.  I am trying to talk a friend in to the Bowlers Journal.  If we do that we can just trade every month and have the best of both magazines.

bones,

I agree with you.  I am only going to go so far without instruction by someone who has a higher knowlege of the game.  Like I stated before, I think the physical tools are there but the mental game is lacking.  I sang to myself tonight to keep me in time and it worked.

Andrew,

As Far as coaching goes, hang tight my brother!  Storm is working on a coaching system that will allow you send video of yourself over the internet to Storm, to be reviewed and critiqued by Storm Staff/Coaches such as David Ozio and Carol Norman.

I can't give you anymore info than above at this time, but they are working on it.  Keep your chin up/keep working on your game and learning more, it is a NEVER ENDING process.
